Lonely Planet review for Petroglyph
There's a spectacular Petroglyph not far from town; if you do Da Flying Frog canopy tour, ask to be taken by. Otherwise, walk toward Rivas, passing the Texaco station, and make a left after the bridge. Pass a school and then a gate on your right. Continue to the old farmhouse; if anyone's around, you should ask permission to cross the land.
Otherwise, follow the irrigation pipes to the river, where you'll find the stone, showing an enormous and elaborate hunting scene carved perhaps 1500 years ago. If you continue upstream, you'll come to a small waterfall.

Great afternoon excursion

Directions in the review are not very accurate…at least not for the petroglyphs that I found near San Juan. The petroglyphs are located on Da Flying Frog property (just outside of San Juan, within walking distance). If you go during Flying Frog hours, you have to pay $5 and they take you to the petroglyphs (talk to Juan). If you go outside of their hours of operation, you can find it yourself. At Da Flying Frog, walk past the office area up the hill until you come to a sign that says: “Reserva Privada Quebrada India Area Protegida”. Go left at this sign until you come to an open area with lots of plastic bottles hung in the tree and a plastic tent on the right. Take the little wooden footpath down to the creek. Petroglyphs are at the bottom. Petroglyphs are carved on one big rock and it is hard to tell what is on the rock, but the experience was great!
