Lonely Planet review for El Colibrí
Serves scrumptious veggie options, organic treats, handmade bread and meatier Mediterranean fare in the beautiful gardens; there's sometimes live music.

Mediterranean fare in the Nica's Club Med

El Colibrí is on the footsteps of San Juan del Sur's flagship resort, Pelican Eyes. It's namesake--the Spanish word for hummingbird--is an apt metaphor cafe: whether you sit in the dining room or the ethereal garden, you, too, feel as though you're hanging around a multi-tone flower, rich with the succor of the region.
The mosaics window, the wind chimes, the African wood statues, even the rocks with serpentine patterns that hold down the menus, El Colibrí does what great garden restaurants do: takes you out of the heat of the day, and reminds you that something eating and drinking can a mystical experience.
The menu offers a kaleidescopic range from gazpacho soups, to filet mignon, to kebobs that could have taken from the streets of Ankara. The proprieter, a world traveler, garners fresh vegetables and seasonings throughout the Masaya region of Nicaragua, to make it one of the freshest and eclectic menus in the country.
The restaurant often features live world music, a well-suited musical ambience to sip the restaurant's home-blended sangria for an experience that is at once fresh and ancient.
