Blog: Kiva Stories from the Field - 12 October 2011

by Jim Burke, KF16, Nicaragua Mercado Oriental spans 60 city blocks and is the largest in Central America. The market is a jungle of stalls, pushcarts, alleyways and low hanging clothes, fruits, and shoes. It’s a full sensory experience that is almost numbing in its frenetic energy. Flies on meats next to sexy new hair [...]

  6. The World of Filters

Blog: Kiva Stories from the Field - 9 September 2010

By Dan Tulchin, KF12, Nicaragua Living in the developed world, we become accustomed to convenient filters that give us what we want, sidestepping some unpleasant truths. Meat is a delicious hamburger with fixings in a toasty bun, for example, and not the carcass at the neighborhood carnicería with flies swarming around it. Clean, potable water is just a slight turn of the wrist away while disposing of waste requires tossing garbage bags on the street or pushing down ever so firmly on the toilet lever.

I guess one could get caught in a trap of capital prejudiced. That is to say after visiting (or just hearing about) the capital cities in Central America, one might think they're all the same.

    Blog: Nicaragua Tourist - 30 March 2010

As you may know, it is common in Nicaragua to drop the ’s’ in many words. For example, “¿Cómo está[s]? Bien, ¿y vo[s]?” Sometimes the spoken word influences the written word in this constantly evolving literary paradise. “Allí tá. La floritería.” Como es sabido, es común en Nicaragua no pronunciar la [...]

Blog: Kiva Stories from the Field - 12 January 2010

By Victoria Kabak, KF9, Nicaragua As I finish up my placement as a Kiva Fellow in Nicaragua, there is one question that I didn’t know the answer to when I arrived and that still confounds me three months later. Why isn’t Nicaragua a more “popular” country to lend to on Kiva? The average time to fund a [...]

The borrowers I’ve liked the most so far have been those who are particularly friendly, have particularly interesting things to say, or give me food. Kenia fell into that first category, and I really enjoyed talking both [...]

By Victoria Kabak, KF9, Nicaragua In one of our training sessions for the 9th class of Kiva Fellows at the end of September, a staffer told us that we might be living and working during our fellowships in places without street signs–because the streets are unnamed. Blog: Patrick and Katrina do the Globe - 21 July 2008

After deciding it had been much too long since we had left the country, we settled on a brief weekend trip to Nicaragua.
