Lonely Planet review for Mercado Oriental

Stash your cash in a couple of places (sock, bra) and try to find a local guide for Central America's largest market and scariest shopping experience. But it's so cheap, and probably the only place in town with live hand grenades…

I always find everything I want at extremely cheap prices!

    managuense recommends this,

If you go in the daytime and practice common sense you'll be ok. That is, more than 200 000 patrons a day visit Mercado Oriental and they've no problem. So just do what the locals do. That is, bring your own carrying bag, a bottle of water, and a baseball cap. Go in groups of 2 or 3, dress like the locals in simple, untocked, solid-color, button shirt, long dark pants, confy shoes, dark socks, no jewelry, no handbags, no Anglo-style plaid shirt with untocked undershirt, no kakhi shorts, no sandals, and definitely, do not bleach or rainbow your hair because most Nicaraguans (about 90%) do not die their hair! Don't smile too much or troublemakers might take you as an easy target. Just act as if you were a local or as if you know the place and you can shop till you drop all day long! You can buy anything at Mercado Oriental at the cheapest prices in the country. So you''ll find souvenir, pottery, fine rum, fine clothes, fabric, haberdashery, fine shoes, leather goods, jewelry, watches, perfumes, hats, toys, furniture, home entertainment, home appliances, china sets, silverware, pots-and-pans, candels, office supplies, medical supplies, hardware, construction equip, and of course, meat, fish, poultry (live and dead), pork, fruit, vegetables, flowers, plants, fertilizers, etc, etc, etc. Then after a long day of surprises, you can relax and have a great organic full meal at any of the inexpensive, yet hearty and safe "comiderias" (lit: eateries) and quench your thirst with any of the more than 100 types of tropical drinks! Then you can head back to your hotel knowing that you had just graduated as a new Managuan! In other words, once you visit Mercado Oriental anywhere else in Nicaragua is going to feel as easy as 1, 2, 3! Believe me, I'm from Managua! So, don't miss this great experience! So, enjoy and good luck!
