  1. San Juan del Sur to Ometepe and the Islands themselves – Part 2

Blog: Viva Latin America! - 20 April 2011

Our next destination on the island was Merida. All the travellers we spoke to about Ometepe recommended heading to Merida and this time advice was spot on. Hacienda Merida is a lovely spot with a friendly atmosphere. After a long hot and very bouncy ride over we took the opportunity to dive into the lake. [...]

  2. San Juan del Sur to Ometepe and the Islands themselves – Part 1

Blog: Viva Latin America! - 18 April 2011

Ometepe means “between two hills” in Nahautl, the indigenous language of Nicaragua. It is an island full of forests, archaeological treasures, mangroves, wildlife and culture so we certainly had no opportunity to be bored. When we looked at the distances on a map it was a relatively short journey from San Juan del Sur to [...]

  3. Day 32: An island made of two volcanoes

Blog: Diaries of a Vagabonding Couple - 15 March 2010

Volcan Concepcion rising in the distance We’ve been struggling for days whether or not to visit Ometepe - an island that came into existence when twin volcanoes Concepcion and Maderas erupted in Lake Nicaragua. Getting there wasn’t a problem, but seeing the island properly would be tough primarily due to the lack of frequent public transportation. Getting from the pier to the next interesting

  4. Schmo Versus the Volcano

Blog: Seth of the Equator - 24 January 2010

It's pretty much impossible to go to a foreign country where you don't totally speak the language and avoid making some mistakes along the way. So, on a multi-month voyage through another continent, a whole range of misguided decisions is pretty much guaranteed. To a large extent, you're relying on the distribution of the mistakes to tend towards the not-so-stupid and not-so-problematic. So, in that sense, I'm quite fortunate that the only legacy of my first significant blunder is a set of extremely sore quadriceps and some dirty fingernails.

  7. Volcan Maderas – You Really Don’t Need A Guide

Blog: Viva Latin America! - 3 December 2009

Or you don’t need the one we had. I’m really getting into this whole climbing volcanoes thing.  I finally see the good in overcoming a challenge, rather than just lamenting making myself feel like rubbish for hours on end.  My brother once accused me of climbing volcanoes like a little old lady.  I think I’ve improved: [...]

  8. Ometepe - it's all action!

Blog: A Travel Diary from Mexico, Central and South America - 30 November 2009

Ometepe is the world's largest fresh-water island. Situated near to the centre of Lago de Nicaragua, with an area of 3000 square miles, it has two volcanos (where doesn't?!) and, according to our guide book, is home to the kindest people in Nicaragua. Volcanos yes, but the kindest people? I'm not so sure. From a tourist perspective you're treated as an inconvenience, whether it be in hostels, shops or restaurants. I'm sure that no malice is intended, but being nice to the customer just isn't something rated highly out here.

  9. The Boat Ride To Ometepe Island

Blog: Viva Latin America! - 30 November 2009

Urgh.  I used to think I had reasonable sea-legs.  I used to quite enjoy the rocking motion of a boat.  But somewhere along the line I think I must have become old, because the journey by boat from Rivas to Ometepe Island in the middle of Lake Nicaragua was pretty unpleasant.  And, to be clear, [...]

  10. Isla de Ometepe

Blog: one more left and i'll be on the right side - 23 April 2009

This shot was taken from San Jorge Harbour, Nicaragua and shows Concepción volcano. This volcano is one of two that forms the island of Ometepe, situated on Lake Nicaragua. St Patrick’s Day - 17th March 2009 – Isla de Ometepe The wind seems to attack these twin volcanoes all along their circumference, as if one hundred thousand [...]
