Activities in town are sparse, but do stop by the Moravian Church, built to the exact specifications of the 1849 original, destroyed in Hurricane Juana. Friendly and simple with nice columns, it has the typical stained glass of the order, depicting a chalice. But chances are, you're eager to explore the constellation of wilderness areas and other attractions just a boat ride from town.

We lived for almost 4 years on the Atlantic Coast of Nicaragua as overseas personnel and my husband was the minister at First Moravian Church in Puerto Cabezas and then Central Moravian Church, Bluefields. It is a beautiful church rich in history dating back to 1859 when the first German Moravian missionaries came to this remote part of the world. March 12th 2009 will be the 160 anniversary and quite a time of celebration. This church with 340 congregations are conservative protestants who love to sing, praise the Lord, educate (they have a school system), promote health (they have several health centres) and promote social development! If you are in the area drop into the church office, introduce yourself to Miss Agnes, check the times for worship and ask to see the archival documents if that is your interest. Or worship with the congregation on Sundays at one of the many chapels around town that are part of Central Moravian Church, Bluefields. Everyone is so very friendly and welcoming you might not want to leave. Tell them Miss Cathy and Rev. Pete sent you! Bluefields is quite safe and is developing and creating more opportunities for tourism. It is a land of Six Nations, Afro-descendents (Creole), Mestizo, Miskitu, Rama, Garifuna, Sumu Mayagna peoples rich in culture, music and foods! You must try Rundown a real Costena dish and coco bread. If you are in Bluefields for Semana Santa (Easter) you are in for a treat. Or for Carnival with street parades, amazing costumes and music. Check out the Bluefields Indian Caribbean University with it's new museum, URACAN University, the Wharf, the park and municipal market are always beehives of activity and worth seeing. La Loma Restaurant has fabulous food with a great view of the lagoon and Bluffs. Now I'm homesick for Bluefields!
