Lonely Planet review for Espressoholic

A serious supporter of coffee addiction is this grungy café, with chipped black tables and colourful graffiti art. Espressoholic keeps late hours (midnight or later), keeping punters happy with a good veggie selection, cool music and courtyard.

    NEVER EVER AGAIN

    By far the worst food and coffee I have EVER had. My partner and I went there for lunch today I ordered the nachos and an iced mocha my partner ordered fries and an iced mocha. The nachos were absolutely cremated the corn chips were black and the cheese was beyond burnt and had crusted all over the plate. Looked and tasted like they had been microwaved to a crisp. Completely inedible! My partners chips were mostly brown and tasted like they had been cooked in extremely dirty oil, again completely inedible. As for the iced mochas I have never tasked anything so putrid in all my life. There was a layer of coffee at the bottom and what just tasted like chocolate milk at the top, obviously wern't mixed at all. I don't think you should have to pay $6.50 for a drink you have to mix yourself with a straw! As for the staff their was an extremely off putting man who looked like he was going through some sort of midlife crisis judging by the way he was dressed dripping almost cup loads of sweat from his forehead all over the counter etc and he was the one bringing peoples meals out to the tables if he wasn't enough to put you off the food itself sure would!

    Cakes, cakes and more cakes!

    This is the PERFECT after dinner dessert cafe - the atmosphere is great (can be a little loud and the music could potentially be a little eclectic for some) and the low-key surroundings belie the wonderful array of cakes on offer. Many a late night treat can be enjoyed here - a number 1 recommendation for the sweet tooth among you!

    While the exterior gives the impression that this is a place for the 'younger generation', don't be fooled. All ages alike will enjoy the cakes and sweets and hot drinks on offer - the large hot chocolates are legendary!

    Definitely worth a visit when you're in town - if the weather's great takeaway a cake and eat it by the waterfront; if the weather's bad, hunker down in one of the street-view 'booth' seats and do some serious people watching.

    You won't feel out of place as a lone traveller with a book, nor will you be frowned at if you're in a large group.

    Recommended in particular: the chai lattes and the chocolate silk cake!

    More than skin deep

    Looks can be deceiving - if ever that adage was applicable, it is here. Painted largely in a dark charcoal, it seems to be recovering from a establishment fire. However within the darkened decor, there's plenty of life. Here and there is some near-graffiti art on the walls. The irregular shaped tables also contain art work on them. The place attracts plenty of loyal regular customers including my friends.

    The coffee is well thought of and delivers the satisfaction that we seek on a fading evening. Many opt for the cinnamon tea, which delivers and equivalent effect. The cafe has a well set out menu offering a delectable selection of cakes and other eateries. We always end up getting something to chew on even when hunger does not motivate. Good grub combined with an informal close atmosphere is excellent to catch up with friends, chat loudly and laugh away without being self-conscious.

    Located in the heart of Wellington, it's just a hop skip and jump away from the various other distractions. Great for a hurried refreshment before catching a movie, theatre production or rendezvous at a pub.
