Fidel’s
A Cuba St institution for caffeine-craving, alternative types. Eggs any-which-way, pizza and splendid salads are cranked out of the itsy kitchen, along with Welly’s best milkshakes. Revolutionary memorabilia adorns the walls of the funky interior; decent outdoor areas too. A superbusy crew copes with the chaos admirably.

The city’s original hip cafe, with food that’s hearty, tasty and inexpensive – heavy on the wholesome and vegetarian. Sitting in the window with Havana coffee and cake is the quintessential Wellington cafe experience.

Lido
Swing into Lido, at the bottom of a racy old office block, for a wide selection of consistent and reasonably priced Med-inspired food. Pancakes and pasta sit happily alongside fish, burgers, antipasto and salad. Great coffee and sweet treats, too. Live jazz Saturday and Sunday evenings.

An airy affair at the sophisticated end of the cafe scene, Nikau consistently dishes up some of the simplest but most delightful fare in town. Refreshing aperitifs, legendary kedgeree and sage eggs, divine sweets, and sunny courtyard.

Deluxe
A stalwart of the late-night cafe scene, with off-beat, oft-changing local art adorning the walls. Cranking, teeny wee space next to the Embassy Cinema that serves hundreds of coffees a day and mainly vegetarian/vegan counter food and pizza slices to loyal customers.

Arthur's & Martha's
Run by the McLeods, whose roots in this neighbourhood descend several generations, this pair of Ladies & Gentlemen tearooms commemorate their heritage in delicious style. Martha proffers finger sandwiches, delicate tarts, and tea in fine bone china, while Arthur wears plaid and dishes up a manly fry-up and pork crackling snacks.
