Yha Wellington City
Wellington's best hostel wins points for fantastic communal areas including two big kitchens and dining ...
Wellington accommodation is generally more expensive than in regional areas. Standards are reasonably high, and there are plenty of options right in or within easy walking distance of the city centre. One hassle is the lack of parking; if you have your own wheels, ask about car parking when you book (and be aware you’ll probably have to pay for it). Wellington’s budget accommodation largely takes the form of multistorey hostel megaliths.

In reality it's simply a waterfront car park, but it's nonetheless unbelievably convenient, offering overnight stays, and modest hourly rates for day-parking. Facilities comprise a sharp ablution block and power supply. Book online.
Many of the rooms in this well-maintained, multistorey buiilding close to Cuba St do indeed enjoy capital views – especially the large, good-value penthouse (sleeps five, $220).
At the Rimutaka Forest Park (45 minutes’ drive from Wellington) there’s a creek-side campsite and six sole-occupancy bush huts (sleeping eight to 18) – great bases for short and long walks into the forest and gor.
In the ubercool Aro Valley ’hood, Mermaid is a small women-only guesthouse in a colourfully restored villa. Each room is individually themed with artistic flair (one with private bathroom, three with shared facilities).
Clean, comfortable studios and apartments across from the Basin Reserve. Can be a tad noisy, but handy for airport runs (or the cricket).
Wow, what a relic! Carillon is a rickety old Victorian mansion that’s somehow evaded the wrecking ball, developers’ ambitions and renovators’ brushstrokes.
Run by the Apollo Lodge folk.
Our top motel choice in the city centre, with plenty of parking. The affable owners offer modern, spacious studios and apartments with spa baths, kitchenettes, slick blond-wood joinery and TVs. Two disabled-access units; larger units sleep six.
Within staggering distance of Courtenay Pl, Apollo Lodge is a loose collation of 35 varied units (one and two bedrooms), ranging from studios to family-friendly units with full kitchen. Nearby apartments available for longer-term stays.
Built in 1868 from native timbers, this lodge is in the thick of historic Thorndon, but a bit too close to the motorway for utter tranquillity.
With wall-to-wall heritage buildings and proximity to the Botanic Gardens, Thorndon makes an atmospheric home base. This well-preserved hotel serves its patrons in fitting style, with a restaurant and bar, and good-value rooms upstairs.
Doggone handy to all the central sights without being too noisy, Tudor-esque Halswell offers a range of options, including small, affordable hotel rooms with TV, fridge and bathroom.
This gracious, book-filled B&B run by award-winning author Jane Tolerton has four guest rooms with TV, CDs and CD/DVD player. Three have en suites, one has a private bathroom.
Saved only after protracted public protest when the new bypass went through, these two tiny 1880 cottages sit amongst a precious precinct of historic Cuba St buildings.
Aesthetes check in and don't want to check out at this bijou hotel on Oriental Parade. Individually decorated rooms are beautified with stylish furniture and contemporary artwork and ceramics, avidly collected by the architect-owner.
Slick and well serviced, the lofty Bolton deserves its five stars. Room options are varied but share a common theme of muted tones, fine linens and colourful artwork.
Wellington's groovy new hostel is slightly squeezed into its back-lane location, hence some tight but funky communal areas (the lounge is a highlight).
