Lonely Planet review
Waitomo Adventures offers five different cave adventures, with discounts for various combos and for advance bookings. The Lost World trip ($310/445 four/seven hours) starts with a 100m abseil down into the cave, then – by a combination of walking, rock climbing, wading and swimming – you journey through a 30m-high cave to get back out, passing glowworms, amazing rock formations, waterfalls and more. The price includes lunch (underground) and dinner. The shorter version skips the wet stuff and the meals.
Haggas Honking Holes ($240, four hours) includes professional abseiling instruction followed by three waterfall abseils, rock climbing and travelling along a subterranean river, traversing narrow passageways and huge caverns. Along the way you see glowworms, cave formations and cave coral.
TumuTumu Toobing ($165, four hours) is a walking, climbing, swimming and tubing trip. St Benedict’s Cavern ($165, three hours) includes abseiling and a subterranean flying fox in a cave with amazing straw stalagmites.
