Te Aroha

Things to do in Te Aroha

  1. Te Aroha Mineral Spas

In the quaint Edwardian Hot Springs Domain behind the Te Aroha i-SITE, this spa offers relaxing private tubs, massage, beauty therapies and aromatherapy. Also here is the temperamental Mokena Geyser – the world’s only known soda geyser – which blows its top every 40 minutes or so, shooting water 3m into the air (the most ardent eruptions are between noon and 2pm).

  2. Behr Burger

Awesome gourmet hamburgers are the go at this buzzy main-street nook. ‘The Chief’ (NZ rump steak, honey-smoked bacon, a free-range egg, cheddar cheese, salad and aioli) plugs the hungry hollows.

  3. Berlusconi on Whitaker

We know the defunct Italian PM has his fingers in a lot of pies, but surely they don’t extend to this upmarket wine, tapas and pizza bar in Te Aroha. Mind you, it is suave enough.

  4. Te Aroha Leisure Pools

The Leisure Pools have outdoor heated freshwater pools for splashing about in. There's also a thermal bath house and a toddlers' pool.

  5. Te Aroha Museum

Te Aroha's lovely museum is in the town's ornate former thermal sanatorium (aka the 'Treasure of Te Aroha'). Displays include quirky ceramics, old spa-water bottles, historic photos and an amazing old printing press from the Te Aroha News.

  6. Organic Health Shop

Self-caterers should try the Organic Health Shop for fresh produce, dairy products, cereals and all things gluten-free.

  7. Mt Te Aroha

Trails up Mt Te Aroha start at the top of the domain. It's a 45-minute climb to Bald Spur/Whakapipi Lookout (350m), then another 2.7km (two hours) to the summit.
