Things to do in Grey Valley

  1. Alfresco

With a family bistro atmosphere, Alfresco serves up meat and seafood grills and a half-dozen tasty pizzas. There are gas heaters or tables inside if the alfresco gets too fresco. They also have charming accommodation in the adjacent building – a double room will run you $60 to $120 and you won’t be disappointed.

  2. Bearded Miner Company

You can have a chat with the guys at the Bearded Miner Company. Friendly bearded types will sit you down in a 1860s-style miners hut and give you a cup of billy tea. You might wonder why they haven’t formed a ZZ Top tribute band.

  3. Wilson’s

Sleepy Reefton could be the most laid-back place you’ll ever visit, but if you do need to slow down, then the two garden bars (count ’em…) at Wilson’s will do the trick. Occasional bands raise the excitement level to somewhere under fever pitch.

  4. Station House Cafe

The Station House Cafe is on a hillside opposite the Moana Railway Station, where the TranzAlpine train pulls in. Aimed at the train-folk but no matter how you got here – it’s the best food in town.

  5. Blackball Salami Co

The Blackball Salami Co sells low-fat venison and beef salami. If you’re planning a barbecue pick up some tasty snarlers as they say in Kiwi-speak – that’s sausages for the uninitiated.

  8. Victoria Forest Park

There’s good tramping in the 182,000-hectare Victoria Forest Park (NZ’s largest forest park), overgrown by five different species of beech tree. Consider the three-day Kirwans, Lake Christabel and Robinson River Tracks or the two-day Big River Track with good mountain biking opportunities. Ask at the i-SITE for information and maps.

  9. Globe Gold Mine Tours

If you want to dig a bit deeper check out the Globe Gold Mine Tours. This new operation takes in many of the gold-flavoured attractions in town including the Bearded Miners and Blacks Point Museum.
