Getting there & around

Most buses stop outside the Fox Glacier Guiding building.

InterCity (03-365 1113; www.intercity.co.nz) runs daily buses north to Franz Josef ($14, 40 minutes, departing 8.30am and 3.25pm), the morning bus continuing to Nelson ($107, 11 hours). Daily southbound services run to Queenstown ($110, 7½ hours, departing 8.45am).

Atomic Shuttles (03-349 0697; www.atomictravel.co.nz) runs daily to Franz Josef ($15, 30 minutes, departing 9am and 1.55pm), continuing to Greymouth ($40, 3¼ hours). Southbound buses run daily to Queenstown ($48, 6½ hours, departing 11am).

TrackNET(0800 483 262, 03-249 7777; www.tracknet.net) has a 9.45am departure to Queenstown ($48) stopping at Wanaka ($35).

Fox Glacier Shuttle (0800 369 287) will drive you to Lake Matheson or Fox Glacier and allow you enough time for a stroll ($12 return, minimum two people).

Naked Bus (www.nakedbus.com) runs north to Franz Josef Glacier, Hokitika and Greymouth, and south to Queenstown, stopping at Haast and Wanaka.
