Getting there & away

Both InterCity (09-913 6100) and Newmans (09-913 6200) buses arrive at and depart from the i-SITE. The Auckland–Wellington and Rotorua–Wellington buses that travel along the eastern side of the lake to and from Taupo all stop at Turangi.

Naked Bus (www.nakedbus.com) runs daily services to Taupo ($7.50, one hour), Tauranga ($39, seven hours) and Auckland ($43, 6½ hours) via Rotorua ($19, two hours). Going south, buses run to Wellington ($49, 5½ hours) via all major stops including Palmerston North ($29, 3½ hours).

Mountain Shuttle (0800 117 686) runs between Turangi and Whakapapa/Tongariro Alpine Crossing three times a day ($35, 40 min).

Tongariro Expeditions (0800 828 763; www.tongariroexpeditions.com) runs shuttles from Turangi ($35, 45 mins), Taupo ($49, 1¼ hours) and Whakapapa ($30, 15 mins) for the Tongariro Alpine Crossing and the Northern Circuit. Shuttles depart at 6.20am and 7am.

Extreme Backpackers also provides shuttles for the Tongariro Alpine Crossing ($35 return) and Northern Circuit ($40), and Whakapapa Ski Area in winter ($40).
