Tongariro Crossing: Post Mortem
Blog: Snaps and Flip Flops - 19 February 2012
The Tongariro Alpine Crossing was tagged as one of New Zealand's best day hike. A life changer even. While it wasn't as core-shaking as they made it out to be, it did change a few things in the way I perceived myself. Even though the hike was the main reason I made this trip, I was a bit apprehensive about doing it. Though i knew deep in my heart that I could finish it, I had my doubts as to whether I could do it on time.

Trek to Mordor
Blog: Snaps and Flip Flops - 17 February 2012
Feb 14, 2012 - The Tongariro Alpine Crossing was the supposed to be the highlight of our NZ trip, and the reason why I chose to go to New Zealand in the first place. But as luck would have it, the weather was uncooperative. We were all promptly geared up at 5:45 AM when our guide/driver told us about the weather forecast.

The North Island of New Zealand
Blog: Wanderlust - 16 July 2010
Tongariro National Park On the first of July I took a short three hour flight from Sydney to Auckland, New Zealand. My remaining flights leading me back to Washington, DC are booked, which means my month in New Zealand is more or less on a deadline. While I’ll still have the freedom to pick up [...]

Taupo and Waitomo
Blog: i'm ash - 2 May 2010
Taupo – the place where all backpackers seem to go solely to do a bungee or skydive. I planned on doing a bungee, saving the skydive for the South Island. I checked into Blackcurrant Backpackers and immediately bumped into a mate from Byron Bay, Australia – Sylvio the Swiss. We went to check out the [...]

Hiking the Tongariro
Blog: Nomadic Matt's Travel Site - 17 March 2010
The Tongariro Crossing is considered the best one day hike in New Zealand. It is a 19.4km hike that takes you through the area where they filmed Mordor in Lord of the Rings. It’s a mostly easy walk, though there are a few places where the ascent and descent is pretty steep. Moreover, if you [...]

2/19/10: Taupo, New Zealand If you simultaneously drop a 160 pound sack of feathers and a 160 pound sack of me from the sky, which one will hit the ground first? If only I carried a huge sack of feathers on me today, I would have found out. Today I went skydiving! Zhou and I can’t remember exactly [...]

Trying to Fish in Taupo
Blog: Nomadic Matt's Travel Site - 23 December 2009
I’ve only been fishing once in my life. It was during an extended stay on the island of Ko Lipe. A few of us had rented a boat to explore the nearby national park and islands. For lunch, our Thai captain went out to catch fish and I was one of the few that [...]

Hiking past Mount Doom
Blog: Itinerant Londoner - 14 November 2009
With only six days to spend in New Zealand, I didn’t have time to do very much. But it wasn’t hard to choose what to do. I’d often read that the Tongariro Alpine Crossing is one of the world’s best day hikes, so after a couple of days relaxing in Auckland after the long flight [...]

Lady in the Land of the Long White Cloud
Blog: A Lady in London - 7 November 2009
I arrived in New Zealand on January 2 and Rob and I drove straight from Auckland to the Coromandel Peninsula. The scenery was spectacular. We saw beautiful coastline, rolling hills, farmland, and lots of small towns along the way. We even got chased down a hill by a gigantic sheep! We stopped in Thames and Coromandel before taking the 309 road, a one-lane gravel shortcut, to Hahei. On the way we came across two adorable hedgehogs and a possum, all of whom I was tempted to bring along with us.
