Bus

The main bus stop is at the Taupo Travel Centre (07-378 9032; 16 Gascoigne St), where you can also make bookings for the following services.

InterCity (09-913 6100) runs several daily buses to Turangi ($25, 45 minutes), Auckland ($60, five hours), Hamilton ($40, 2¾ hours), Rotorua ($29, one hour), Tauranga ($51, 2¾ hours), Napier ($44, two hours), Palmerston North ($52, 4¼ hours) and Wellington ($81, six hours).

Naked Bus (www.nakedbus.com) runs daily services to Auckland ($43, five hours), Hamilton ($29, three hours), Rotorua ($19, one hour), Tauranga ($39, 6½ hours), Turangi ($7.50, one hour), Napier ($21, two hours), Palmerston North ($34, 3½ hours), Waitomo ($49, 3½ hours) and Wellington ($49, 5½ hours). Substantial fare savings can be made by booking in advance.

Shuttle services operate year-round between Taupo, Turangi and Tongariro National Park. In winter, services run to Whakapapa Ski Area (1½ hours) and can include package deals for lift tickets and ski hire. See p312 for details.
