Bus

InterCity (07-578 8103) connects Tauranga with Auckland ($41, 4½ hours), Hamilton ($29, two hours), Rotorua ($31, 1½ hours), Taupo ($51, three hours) and Wellington ($106, nine hours). Tickets and timetables are available at the i-SITE.

Naked Bus (www.nakedbus.com) runs daily services to Auckland ($29, 3½ hours), Hamilton ($22, 1½ hours), Waitomo ($39, 2½ hours), Whakatane ($11, one hour), Rotorua ($9, 1½ hours), Taupo ($39, three hours), Napier ($59, five hours) and Wellington ($59, 12 hours). Substantial fare savings can be made by booking in advance.

Bay Hopper (0800 422 928; www.baybus.co.nz) runs a morning and afternoon weekday bus to Rotorua ($11, 1½ hours) via Te Puke ($4.50, 30min). Daily buses go to Whakatane ($12, 1½ hours) with onward connections to Ohope and Opotiki. Bay Hopper buses leave from Wharf St.

Supa Travel Express (07-571 0583) runs on-demand buses to Auckland Airport (one way $80), as does Tauranga Airport Shuttles (07-571 6177). Coastline Shuttles (07-541 0888; www.coastlineshuttles.co.nz) runs airport transfers to Auckland ($80), Hamilton ($60) and Rotorua ($55) by arrangement.

If you’re heading to Hamilton on route K, don’t forget the toll road costs $1.

Air

Air New Zealand (07-577 7300; cnr Devonport Rd & Elizabeth St) has daily direct flights to Auckland and Wellington, and to Christchurch from Monday to Friday, with connections to other centres. Local outfit Island Air (0800 545 455; www.islandair.co.nz; Tauranga Airport) does scheduled and charter flights to Great Barrier Island and Whitianga. Tauranga’s airport is at Mt Maunganui.
