    Blog: Landlopers - 26 August 2011

Being American as I am, I always thought the term ‘spa’ referred to a place where people go to receive massage treatments, facials and pedicures. Once in a while I would notice people calling their Jacuzzi a ‘spa’ but I quickly dismissed it. It wasn’t...Copyright LandLopers All Rights Reserved. Unauthorized use prohibited.

    Blog: Landlopers - 3 August 2011

One of the first things I noticed at the Te Puia cultural center in Rotorua, New Zealand was a sign with the daunting phrase, “Te Whakarewarewatanga O Te Ope Taua A Wahiao.” My brain hurt just thinking about how to pronounce it, but the guide...Copyright LandLopers All Rights Reserved. 7. Social Media Success for New Zealand, Plus a Rotorua Slideshow

    Blog: Travelogged - 22 March 2011

Travel seems like a subject that was custom-made for social media, even though of course it predates it. Travel enthusiasts love talking about travel and bond easily over sharing stories and advice. So it’s not surprising that that the travel community has flourished on Facebook, StumbleUpon and Twitter, where it has developed an extensive list [...]

  8. Hells Gate Thermal Reserve in Rotorua, New Zealand

    Blog: Pommie Travels - 12 February 2011

In 2009 I went to the North Island of New Zealand and visited this geothermal park in Rotorua. When you get to Rotorua, the sulphur in the air means it smells like rotten eggs…not very pleasant. But after a while you get used to it and it is incredible to see this hotbed of geothermal [...]

    Blog: Wanderlust - 16 July 2010

Tongariro National Park On the first of July I took a short three hour flight from Sydney to Auckland, New Zealand. My remaining flights leading me back to Washington, DC are booked, which means my month in New Zealand is more or less on a deadline.  While I’ll still have the freedom to pick up [...]

    Blog: i'm ash - 28 April 2010

After a couple of weeks stuck working in Auckland I’m finally back on the road!  It was a spot of luck discovering Freemans Lodge Hostel – with its free wifi, clean rooms and friendly owner it’s the best hostel I’ve stayed in. 13. Rotorua. It Stinks.

Blog: No Hurry Curry - 28 February 2010

2/18/10: Rotorua, New Zealand New Zealand is beautiful. I can say this now with confidence because yesterday we drove all the way – three whole hours! – from Auckland to Rotorua. We passed pine tree (I think) forests, towns with cute smoking chimneys, cows lying peacefully in the grass (but oddly enough, no sheep), small ponds [...]

  14. Smelly Man goes to Sulphur City (and we get to share a room with him)

Blog: Some Travel Required - 31 January 2010

With our adrenaline still pumping from playing on the swings in Waitomo, we made our way south to Rotorua a.k.a Sulphur City.  Rotorua is a hotbed (I had to) of thermal activity with lots of bubbly mud pools, hot springs, and geysers and as a result the place stinks of egg most of the time.  Amazingly this doesn't seem to have deterred tourists and backpackers from visiting as Rotorua is one of the most touristy and commercialized areas in New Zealand.

  16. A Look at Maori Culture

    Blog: Nomadic Matt's Travel Site - 6 January 2010

Maori culture has always fascinated me ever since I saw the movie Whale Rider. Their history, cool tattoos, dancing, beliefs, and general relaxed personality make them very interesting to me. As the indigenous people of New Zealand, they haven’t done well since the arrival of European settlers. Then again, no indigenous population fared well after [...]

Rotorua, New Zealand is one of the most popular tourist destinations on the North Island. Besides being known for its hordes of tourist, this city is famous for its smell. The sulfur springs [...]

  19. Playing Around Rotorua

    Blog: Away Together - 18 December 2009

We spent the past week in Rotorua, a North Island city famous for adventure sports and stinky geothermal sites. Perhaps no other city in New Zealand, or anywhere, has come up with more ways to thrill tourists (and make them part with money) with “adventure” broadly defined.

    Blog: Itinerant Londoner - 15 November 2009

I can’t remember if it was because I first saw it on telly when I was a kid, or because my mum told me about it (she lived in New Zealand when she was a teenager), but Rotorua was one of the first places in the world I remember wanting to visit when I [...]

  21. Lady in the Land of the Long White Cloud

    Blog: A Lady in London - 7 November 2009

I arrived in New Zealand on January 2 and Rob and I drove straight from Auckland to the Coromandel Peninsula. The scenery was spectacular. We saw beautiful coastline, rolling hills, farmland, and lots of small towns along the way. We even got chased down a hill by a gigantic sheep! We stopped in Thames and Coromandel before taking the 309 road, a one-lane gravel shortcut, to Hahei. On the way we came across two adorable hedgehogs and a possum, all of whom I was tempted to bring along with us.

  22. North Island, New Zealand

Blog: By Way of the World - 7 July 2009

From Christchurch, we made our way to Picton, a town in the Marlborough sounds at the northern end of New Zealand's South Island. From there were able to take the Interislander Ferry, which took about four hours to get to Wellington. It had beautiful views of the Marlborough Sounds, though it was very cold out on the deck, so we weren't able to stay outside long.
