Bus

All the major bus companies stop outside the i-SITE, from where you can arrange bookings.

InterCity (07-348 0366; www.intercitycoach.co.nz) and Newmans (07-348 0999; www.newmanscoach.co.nz) run daily buses to and from Auckland ($56, four hours), Hamilton ($40, 1½ hours), Tauranga ($30, 1½ hours), Whakatane ($31, 1½ hours), Gisborne ($57, 4½ hours) via Opotiki ($31, 2¼ hours), and Taupo ($26, one hour), Napier ($64, three hours), and Wellington ($90, eight hours).

Naked Bus (www.nakedbus.com)  runs daily services to Auckland ($39, 3½ hours), Hamilton ($24, 1½ hours), Waitomo ($49, 2½ hours), Tauranga ($9, 1½ hours), Whakatane ($24, 1½ hours), Taupo ($19, one hour), Napier ($24, three hours), and Wellington ($49, 6½ hours). Substantial fare savings can be made by booking in advance.

Air

Air New Zealand (07-343 1100; cnr Fenton & Hinemoa Sts; 9am-5pm Mon-Fri, 9.30am-12.30pm Sat) offers daily direct flights to Auckland, Christchurch and Wellington, with onward connections to other destinations.

Qantas (www.qantas.com.au) flies direct to Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Queenstown, with onward connections.
