Bus

The bus stop for InterCity (03-443 7885; www.intercity.co.nz) is outside the i-SITE on the lakefront. Wanaka receives daily buses from Queenstown ($32), which motor on to Franz Josef ($86) via Haast Pass ($44). For Christchurch ($68) you’ll need to change at Tarras, and for Dunedin ($45) at Cromwell.

Naked Bus (www.nakedbus.com) travels to Queenstown, Christchurch, Cromwell and the West Coast.

The town is well serviced by door-to-door shuttles and buses, nearly all of which can be booked at the iSITE. K Bus (03-358 8355; www.kbus.co.nz), Connexions (03-443 9122; www.time2.co.nz) and Atomic Shuttles (03-349 0697; www.atomictravel.co.nz) all service Christchurch ($50 to $60) and Queenstown ($20 to $30). Wanaka Connexions and Catch-a-Bus (03-479 9960; www.catchabus.co.nz) head to Dunedin ($50); Atomic Shuttles goes to Fox ($40) and Franz Josef ($45) Glaciers and on to Greymouth ($80). The majority pick up near the i-SITE; inquire when you book.

Air

Air New Zealand (0800 737 000; www.airnz.co.nz) has daily flights between Wanaka and Christchurch (from $99). Aspiring Air (0800 100 943, 03-443 7943; www.aspiringair.com) has daily flights between Queenstown and Wanaka ($155, 20 minutes) in small, twin-engine planes.
