Lonely Planet review for Underwater Observatory

Underwater Observatory has six giant windows showcasing life under the lake. Brown trout abound, and based on their generous size, look to be impossibly well fed. Keep a keen eye out for freshwater eels and the favourite of the kiddies – the scaup (diving ducks), which dive down and swim right past the windows.

    Viewing pleasure, Queenstown, May 2010

    diskodolly recommends this,

Wonder to the end of the pier near Queenstown beach and you will see the departure office for the Kawarau Jet Boat, bypass this costly (although I'm sure exhilarating activity) and head downstairs to the Underwater Observatory. Upon parting with $5 entry, you will find yourself in a smallish room with a wall of glass for viewing the underwater life. I popped an additional $1 into the 'fish feeder' and was suddenly mesmerised by the hive of activity, fat trout (some of which weigh upto 10kg), metre long eel, looking very slippery indeed and Scoup Ducks, which are apparently the only diving ducks in NZ (now their is a fact of the day) and can dive for upto 45 seconds and to depths of 8metres in search of food. They look almost cartoon like as they dive in deep and fight amongst the eel and trout for the fish food. A cheap way to pass a very small amount of time in Qtown.
