My first NZ trip Feb-Apr 2015 (6-8 weeks) - advice, tips, travel buddies welcome!

I'm an Australian wanting to visit New Zealand for my first time, from around February 2015 through to early April 2015 around 6-8 weeks.

A bit about myself and what I want to get out of my first trip to New Zealand:
- I am very much into budget travelling, e.g. veteran CouchSurfing/BeWelcome member, have camped quite a few times in Northwest Canada/Alaska/Patagonia, used hostels and couchsurfing exclusively
- I have hitchhiked and got rideshares a few times in Northwest Canada, Alaska,…

Winter Hiking in New Zealand

I am looking to go solo hiking sometime during the coming winter (sometime between June and August). I will have 14 days in total and would love to do a 7+day hike.

Would love to hear some suggestions of where I would be able to go. I have limited experience with ice climbing and would prefer a straightforward hike. I have a winter tent and a sleeping bag rated to -20c.

Bank Accounts & Tax Number

Hi,

Sorry if this has previously been asked but couldn't see an answer in the forum. I will be going to NZ in Feb/March and traveling about for the first couple of months. I need to set up a bank account and tax number when I get there but will have no fixed address. Does anyone know what I can do?

Thanks for any help.

Hi,
I am wondering if anyone has had any experience bringing back Valium through customs? I have a half-used pack here in Vietnam that I would not really like to throw away as they're handy for sleeping!

I Fly from Saigon to KL then into Auckland on Saturday.

campervan hire in wellington

Hi, I would like to hire a campervan/motorhome from wellington in March 2015. I have spent hours searching the internet but can only find 1 company (jucy) that doesnt charge a relocation fee, I thought wellington was the capital of new zealand so this seems very strange to me that there is only 1 company with only 2 styles of vans for hire in the countries capital.
Can someone please prove me wrong and send me in the right direction...thx in advance..c

Internet connection and WIFI in New Zealand

I have rented a camper-van for 4 weeks around New Zealand. Prices of roaming are prohibited so I want to now what the possibilities are to have internet mobile connection for such a short period of time. If it is too much hassle or too expensive, are there many WIFI locations around? Thanks in advance :-)

Looking for travel companions for road trip out of Christchurch to mountains

Hi, I'm travelling to New Zealand's south island from Dec. 31 - Jan. 6. Am heading to Franz Josef glacier and other mountains from Christchurch. Looking to see if anyone else is going that way and looking to share costs for a hire car.

I'm a 35-year-old Aussie male, a journalist from Melbourne, very laid-back. Happy to travel with anyone so long as they're not right-wing rednecks, obnoxious or insane.

Get in touch. I'll be in Christchurch on NYE.

Parking (or camping) with a camper in Auckland

Hello! I'll be self driving in NZ with a camper. I plan to spend a few hours in Auckland, to have some urban feeling; the problem is that I know that driving and specially parking the camper in the city center isn't a good idea so, any recommendations? I wonder if there is a parking place (free or reasonably cheap) in the outskirts of the city with good public transport connection to the center.

Another option would be spending one night in Auckland. If so, I'd need a camping with good public…

Cycling NZ

Hi folks, looking for a bit of advice on cycling in N Island.
BF and I are (hopefully) cycling the full length of both islands but having fun figuring out a way to our start point!
Has anyone had experience of the buses from Auckland to Cape Reinga? If so could you recommend any particular operators etc so I can check their policy on carrying bikes.
In addition is there any other route to/from Cape Reinga other than Highway 1 or along 90mile beach itself?
Any other advice or recommendations on…
