Lonely Planet review

This was the first outfit to offer dolphin-swimming trips in the bay. Their Swim with the Dolphins Cruise (adult/child $89/45) is a four-hour trip departing at 8am and 12.30pm, with an additional $30 payable if you choose to swim. If you'd like to see dolphins but prefer to stay dry, the four-hour Discover the Bay Cruise (adult/child $95/48) departs at 9am and 1.30pm, heading to the Hole in the Rock and stopping at Urupukapuka Island. This cruise is combined with a trip to Kerikeri Basin in the seven-hour Day Discovery Cruise (adult/child $109/45).

Other options include a day sail on Lion NZ (adult/child $110/70), the 80ft maxi yacht used by the late Sir Peter Blake on two Whitbread round-the-world races and his winning Sydney-to-Hobart entry in 1984. If you've a taste for speed, Ocean Adventure (adult/child $95/48) is a 2½ hour blast on a rigid-hulled inflatable to the Hole in the Rock.
