    Redcliff Bar & Restaurant

Housed in a replica old settler’s cottage, Redcliff specialises in a buzzy, convivial atmosphere and locally sourced produce. Try the wild Fiordland venison or tender herby hare. Wine is affordably priced, but a few more options by the glass wouldn’t go amiss. They don’t take bookings so kick off your night with a drink in the rustic front bar; it’s also the place in town for a quiet after-dinner drink. There’s occasional live music and a permanent friendly vibe with excellent service.

    Fat Duck

Friendly service overcomes the slightly bland decor, and the Fat Duck gets top-notch reviews from most travellers. Dishes are tasty, and hearty in proportions, and variations on basics such as crispy duck, pork belly and salmon are imaginative. There’s a bar almost as long as Doubtful Sound if you just want a drink before kicking on somewhere else. Closed Monday and Tuesday outside of the peak season.

    Glasshouse

Come along for the ultimate pre-Milford Sound breakfast, and then return for dinner to sample innovative, well-priced variations on lamb, venison and chicken. The minimalist decor is slightly clinical, but the effusive and warm service easily compensates.

    Ruchee

It’s great to have a subcontinental alternative to Te Anau’s plethora of Italian eateries, and this is a pleasant, mellow place for a curry. The cooking isn’t going to change your life, but it’s not bad for provincial NZ. Takeaways are available.

    Miles Better Pies

The classic Kiwi pie has never looked better. Choose from freshly made gourmet venison, Thai curry or apricot pies. There are a few pavement tables, but sitting beside the lake is nicer, and the pies also make a good snack for the road.

    La Toscana

Buzzy, noisy and relaxed, with wooden booths and tables, this is a lively spot for a late-night snack, or a good dinner option. Pizzas and pastas are large and great value, and takeaways and deliveries are available.
