    Holy Grail

    Closed until further notice.

In a converted art-deco theatre, the raucous Holy Grail is about as subtle as an All Blacks fan’s reaction to a bad refereeing decision. Watch live sport on a huge 10m screen from the indoor grandstand – if you’re watching the Canterbury Crusaders rugby team, wearing red and black is recommended, but not mandatory.

    Murphy's Irish Bar

Less painfully Irish than most of the country's Irish bars, rustic, no-nonsense Murphy's has live music, generally of the foot stompin' and fiddle-playin' variety, on Friday nights. Couches in front of the gas heater are a nice spot to lounge on a cold winter evening.

    Tasting Room

In the thick of the action, this Monteith's-sponsored gastropub features clubby décor and leather banquettes (think city-slicker hunting lodge), but it's the antler 'chandelier' that most impressed us. If you're brave, wild game is a feature on the menu.

    Four Fish Sports Bar

This bottle shop and bar has a café too, with lunches for $15, or choices from the cabinet, while in the evening the place goes á la carte with fish, steak, hotpot-type fare. Takeaway pizzas available.

    JJ Murphy & Co

A popular bar in Cuba Mall with outdoor tables. Inside it's all dark-wood booths, big barrels and plenty of pool tables. The classic pub menu is Irish-themed and there's live music Wednesday to Sunday.

    Ponderosa

Ponderosa is a fun, intimate, Wild West-themed cocktail bar (trust us, it's better than it sounds) with tree-stump tables, cowhide cushions and mounted animal heads. Ride 'em cowboy.

    Dogs Bollix

This Irish pub is a live-music venue from Tuesday to Sunday but doesn’t only play Irish music. Spot local musos here when they’re off-duty.

    Waxy O’Sheas

Noisy drinking den of the clan O’Bogan. Reputedly the planet’s southernmost Irish pub.

    Bog

Faux-Irish pub with comfy seats upstairs and hearty pub food.

    Dockside

An upmarket, nautically themed restaurant-bar, popular for after-work tie-loosening later in the week (it's nicknamed the 'dry cleaners' on a Friday night, as it's where you come to pick up a suit). Great indoor-outdoor venue with water frontage and quality seafood.
