Larnach Castle

Lonely Planet review

Standing proudly on the peninsula’s highest point, Larnach Castle was an extravagance of the Dunedin banker, merchant and politician, William Larnach. Built in 1871 to impress his French-nobility-descended wife, the Gothic mansion is filled with exquisite antique furnishings. The gardens offer fantastic views of the peninsula and harbour. Without your own transport, a tour is the only way to visit.
