The charming township of Akaroa sits at the edge of a pleasing harbor inside the eroded crater of a gigantic, extinct volcano. Akaroa is located an hour and a half drive southeast of Christchurch on Banks Peninsula, the South Island’s most impressive volcanic feature. The peninsula has two prevailing craters which form Lyttelton and Akaroa [...]

New Zealand is Open for Business
Blog: Hole In The Donut - 21 March 2011
Sometimes, I think Chicken Little was right. When I think about the number of disasters, both natural and man-made, that have occurred over the past ten years, it’s easy to believe sky is falling. As a travel writer, I’m especially sensitive to the effects of natural disasters on tourism. Travelers who were planning to visit [...]

From Christchurch to Queenstown
Blog: Snaps and Flip Flops - 14 September 2010
Sept 9, 2010 - After a night of being locked up in our hotel room, we were anxious to get out of Christchurch. It was a pity we didn’t get to see much of the city, but at the same time, it was such a unique experience that we didn’t mind very much. Nonetheless, we were eager to leave and explore the rest of the South Island.

Locked up in Christchurch
Blog: Snaps and Flip Flops - 8 September 2010
Sept. 8, 2010 - So we landed in Christchurch today, 4 days after a 7.1 earthquake hit the city. The flight attendant bid us "Good luck out there" as we got off the plane. Errr...if we weren't worried before, it got us thinking now. We later found out that we barely missed another aftershock too. But what the heck, we're here and there is nothing to do but sit back and relax. We didn't realize how accurate that is until we got to the CBD. A portion of the city has been closed off and most of the shops were not in operation.

Apologies to Christchurch
Blog: Brooke vs. the World | RTW Travel Blog - 9 August 2010
Look, Christchurch, about all that anti-New Zealand talk I gave earlier: it’s not you, it’s me. I said those things before I ever got a chance to know you… the real you. Because with so many cafes and bars, and cafe/bars, one could say that you are actually kind of cool.

Fonendoscopio, Pedaling the South Island of New Zealand
Blog: Bearshapedsphere - 9 February 2010
I'm leaving my house in about two hours to head to the airport. Some many, many hours later, I will reappear out of the wormhole in Christchurch, New Zealand. Christchurch! New Zealand! I know, I'm as surprised as you are.One of the main events on this trip, which, as always will be comprised of bundles of smaller events, moments, rash decisions and fleeting thoughts is the renting of a bicycle and riding it around.

Away From Home For the Holidays
Blog: Nomadic Matt's Travel Site - 25 December 2009
Growing up, I often spent Christmas at my friend Matt’s house. In fact, it often seemed like everyone I knew spent Christmas at his house. After everyone had their family Christmas, we congregated there to celebrate together. Even after college, my friends and I still managed to spend Christmas at Matt’s house, holding onto that [...]

New Zealand
Blog: Patrick and Katrina do the Globe - 14 September 2009
After a fourteen-hour flight from Santiago, a layover in Auckland, and another short flight to the South Island, we arrived with bleary eyes in Christchurch, New Zealand. We were pretty excited about getting to a place where English is the first language, but we soon realized that Kiwis have their own variety of English; the accent and vocabulary are so different we often found ourselves scratching our heads. It took us a bit of time to figure out not to be insulted when asked if we were planning to "do some tramping" while on the island (meaning hiking).

A little bit about… Christchurch
Blog: Twenty-Something Travel - 8 September 2009
When I was considering working abroad in New Zealand Christchurch was my first choice of location. Everything I’ve read describes it as an “English City.” I’m a serious Anglophile so I’m curious to see how the English atmosphere translates in this far corner of the world. Here’s what I’ve discovered:

Blog: 12FOOT3 - 16 December 2008
After our stint in Dunedin (Ma, I’m done eatin’!), we were pretty tired…after all, we had been on the go pretty aggressively for 3 weeks in order to fully experience all that New Zealand has to offer. So, for the next several days, we took it easy as we drove up the east coast of [...]
