Lonely Planet review for Gondola
The gondola whisks you from the Heathcote Valley terminal to the cafe-restaurant complex on Mt Cavendish (500m) in 10 minutes. Expect great views over Lyttelton Harbour and towards the Southern Alps. Paths lead to the Crater Rim Walkway, or you can gondola up and cycle down. Lyttelton bus 28 travels here. Secure a combo deal (adult/child/family $35/12/80) if you’re planning on also riding the tram.

Fun to do with kids

Took this Gondola trip in February with my 2 kids. They loved the trip up the mountain, the gondola is fully sealed off from the elements so we were all snug and I didnt have to worry about them falling out.
You can hire mountain bikes from the Gondola centre and take them up with you. The trip down on Mountain bike is awesome, some of the best mountain bike trails I've seenKilometres of well built sweeping single track through the Port Hills.
Views across the city and to Lyttleton Harbor are also great from teh top. The Volcano train is a kitsch experience free with your Gondola ticket, but watch out for the ever ubiquitous All Black souvenirs!
Serviceable cafe at the top with decent coffee and scones. Well worth the trip. Locals can also buy a season ticket which gets you unlimited rides, definitely worth considering if you have juniors who need entertaining!Good for: sight seeing, kids, Mountain biking
