SPQR
This Ponsonby Rd hot spot is well known for Roman-style, thin, crusty pizzas and excellent Italian-influenced mains. The surrounds are a stylish blend of the industrial and the chic, the lights are low (bring your reading glasses!), the buzz constant and the smooth staff aren't beyond camping it up.

O’Sarracino
A delicious reminder that Neapolitan cuisine offers so much more than pizza, this excellent restaurant serves generous antipasti, light and simple pasta, and delectable seafood secondi (mains). The somewhat grand surroundings were once the chapel of a funeral parlour.

Like the name says, there’s not only pizza on offer here – delicious though that is. NSP has a large menu of classic Italian antipasti, pasta and grills, and a cool street-facing bar with a chandelier made of Peroni bottles.

Prego
This friendly and stylish Italian restaurant covers all the bases, with a fireplace in winter and a courtyard in summer. And on the subject of bases, the pizza is pretty damn fine, as are the inventive Italian mains.

Delicious
The name doesn’t lie. Foodies flock to this neighbourhood eatery for simple but first-rate pasta, risotto and gnocchi. They don’t take bookings so expect to wait – it’s usually busy.

Coco's Cantina
Rub shoulders with Auckland's hipsters and foodsters at this bustling cantina where the wait for a table is part of the experience. Propping up the bar is hardly a hardship: the ambience and drinks list see to that. The rustic menu is narrowly focussed, seasonal and invariably delicious.
