  1. Aotea Sea Kayaks

    Aotea Sea Kayaks runs harbour ($50, two hours), sunset ($60, two hours), snorkelling ($90, four hours) and phosphorescent night paddles ($90). Kayaks (per day $40 to $60) and snorkelling equipment (per day $25) can be hired, as well as sea kayaks kitted out with lines and tackle for fishing (per day $80).

  2. Wild Rose Cafe

    Wild Rose does the best impersonation of an Auckland cafe on the island, albeit with the addition of local crowd-pleasers such as toasted sandwiches and burgers. It uses free-range, organic and local produce whenever possible.

    This lively and child-friendly pub has a changing menu of seafood, steak and burgers, and is the island’s social centre. Rub shoulders with local musos on Thursday jam nights.

    While it doesn’t live up to the promise of its quirky name, this is the best gap-filler in the centre of the island, serving pretty good nachos, salads and pies.

  7. Tramline Track

    A more challenging tramp is the Tramline Track (five hours), which starts on Aotea Rd and follows old logging tramlines to Whangaparapara Harbour. The track is hilly and in some parts the clay becomes slippery after rain.

    A very popular walk is the Kaitoke Hot Springs Track. The natural hot pools in a bush stream can be reached from Whangaparapara Rd (45 minutes).

    The 11km Harataonga Coastal Walk (five hours) heads from Harataonga Bay to Whangapoua.

    Serving simple but satisfying meals in large portions, this popular haunt has an inviting deck overlooking the harbour. There’s a cheaper bistro menu in the bar.

  12. Stray Possum Lodge

    Offers pizzas and a varied menu in a convivial atmosphere (especially in summer), and is fully licensed. Ring ahead as opening hours aren’t set in stone.
