Hi! This is our first trip to New Zealand and we decided to see part of the South Island before landing in Wellington to visit friends for our 2nd week. We are flying into Christchurch, staying for one night, taking the Trans Alp train across to Greymouth where we rent a car. Then we drive to Punakaiki where we have a beach house for 2 nights, then drive to Kaiteriteri at Abel Tasman park for 3 nights before we drive to Nelson to fly to Wellington to visit friends.
Any advice for must-dos on…
I'm looking at applying for a working holiday visa for New Zealand. If you apply for a 23 month working holiday visa, is there a limit on the number of months you can work for? Obviously the ceiling would be 23 months, but is there a limit below that...e.g you can work for 12 and only and the rest is free time.
Thanks in advance,
Hello friends, we are travelling to NZ 18 days in March, and would appreciate any ideas and/or recommendations about this plan.
We are a family with 2 kids, 14 and 5 yo, and will be renting a small camper for most of the trip (the idea is to sleep in the camper when possible, even though we can spend some nights at hotels if necessary).
We like more nature than cities, and natural landscapes than cityscapes. In spite of this, we would like to spend a few days visiting some of the cities.
I am a pro…
Hello fellow travelers,
I'm currently planning my 3 week trip through New Zealand in February / early March 2016 and have some questions about the "feasibility" of getting from place to place with public transport. I do have a driver license but I am traveling solo and not feeling comfortable driving in a strange country. I have come up with this itinerary:
Bay of Islands (Paihia)(by bus)
Rotorua (by bus from Paihia -> see my question below)
National Park (by bus from Rotorua)
I am having a lot of trouble finding a bus that goes from Christchurch to Mt Cook and back cheaply and regularly. I want to be able to leave very early in the morning from Christchurch and then leave Mt Cook in the late afternoon/at night. I can't even seem to find a suitable bus route from Christchurch to Twizel and back (and I know there are shuttle buses from Twizel to Mt Cook.)
We are travelling New Zealand and at the moment are in Kaikoura for 2 nights, Hanmer Springs for 1 night and then plan to travel down the west coast seeing pancake rocks, Franz Josef, Fox Glacier, Mirror Lake and then travelling on to Wanaka and Queenstown. We plan to stay in Wanaka on 21st November so we have 3 nights after we leave Hanmer Springs and before we arrive in Wanaka.
We were thinking of staying in Greymouth and Franz Josef. We don't know whether to stay 2 nights in Franz Josef or…
I'm arriving by air to Nelson airport (NSN), scheduled as 18:20 arrival - from the airport I'd like to make my way to Kaiteriteri or Marahau to start exploring Abel Tasman the following day. The Intercity bus looks like it only departs Nelson in the AM hours. Hiring a car seems wasteful since I won't need one for the four days I plan to be in the park.
Does anybody know what options I have in the early evening besides a taxi to get where I need to go ?
Just a quick summary of my 11 day recent trip (alone). Some facts that might be of interest to future travellers planning something similar.

Just got divorced looking to go NZ in the the new year for at lest 6 months.Did a 3 weeks in a camper van about 10 years ago.
I am looking to meet people, go with the flow adventure, i don't have to work but will do to meet people and experience different things.
So to the question traveling around NZ
Do I buy a
cheapest camper van?
A big car going to hostels/ campsite and now and then sleep in car?
On off bus ?
If anyone can give me any advice much appreciated.
We are travelling to NZ with our then 8 month old baby - we have a total of 5 weeks in the country and plan to stay the latter 2 weeks on the North Island (we could still change the ferry to have more or less time vs. South Island)
We have rented a small campervan (w/o toilet and shower) which we will hand back on New Years Eve in Auckland and then have three nights in Auckland (accomodation pre-booked via airBnB). For the previous 11-12 days I am wondering what a tentative…
