Getting there & around

Air Calédonie (main office 45 42 77, airport 45 55 10; Tuo; 8-11am & 2-5pm Mon-Fri) has an office in Tuo on the main road between La Roche and Tadine.

The easiest way to get around Maré is by car since there is no public transport. You can try biking around Maré if you are fit but the inland roads are long, straight and monotonous. Some places to stay rent bikes (1000 CFP per day) to guests.

Hôtel Nengone Village (45 45 00; scooters per half-/full-day 2500/4000 CFP, bikes per half-/full-day 600/1000 CFP) Based in Cengéité; rents scooters and bicycles.

Jema Location (45 44 06; per day 5760 CFP)

Maré Île de Beauté (45 43 75; per day 6500 CFP)

You can also try hitching. Drivers stop readily but depending on where you want to go it could be a long wait.

All places to stay offer island tours (around 2000 CFP) and airport or wharf transfers.
