Lonely Planet review for Yak Restaurant
An unpretentious and reliable Tibetan-run place at the end of Thamel. The booths give it a ‘Tibetan diner’ vibe and the clientele is a mix of trekkers, Sherpa guides and local Tibetans who come to shoot the breeze over a cigarette and a tube of tongba (hot millet beer). The menu includes Tibetan dishes, with good kothey (fried momos), and some Indian dishes, at unbeatable prices. It feels just like a trekking lodge, down to that familiar electronic sound of a chicken being strangled every time a dish leaves the kitchen.

The best, ugliest, cheapest and nearest to my heart place
soeptas recommends this,
One of the best places in Kathmandu. It was the first place I entered when I arrived. Alone and unfamiliar with the powercuts, I was very happy to see a blonde woman reading a book (under a lamp) without being disturbed.
From the first view it's unbelievably ugly and cheaply decorated. But then you order a small pot of massala or Nepali tea (enough for 4 cups) and momo's, you start appreciating this place. I think I ate there 5 times. It would have been more but in the evening it tends to be full. So if you're with more than 4 persons, order in advance. Especially on weekend evenings.
The menu is Tibetan and Indian. I think it's one of the most safe places to eat. I say this of experience, unfortunately :)
It's cheap and that means less VAT. You can't pay more than 450 Rs because the volume of your appetite won't let you. :) I love that place x
