Lonely Planet review for Yak Café
Another unpretentious and reliable Tibetan-run place at the other end of Thamel. The booths give it a 'Tibetan diner' vibe and the clientele is a mix of trekkers with their Sherpa guides and local Tibetans who come to shoot the breeze over a cigarette and a tube of tongba (hot millet beer). The menu includes Tibetan dishes, with good kothey (fried momos), and South Indian food, at unbeatable prices.
It feels just like a trekking lodge, down to that familiar electronic sound of a chicken being strangled every time a dish is ready.

Great food in the heart of Kathmandu
nahuel recommends this,
A great place in the heart of Kathmandu. Friendly people, good service, very good food at really cheap prices. Nice atmosphere. We went to some other places but always returned there. The tibetan and indian dishes are delicious and the place is very clean.

Yak Steak at Yak Cafe
melfrommanly recommends this,
I was a new- bie to Nepal when i first went here for dinner. We had met our trekking group that afternoon and the suggestion was to meet for dinner at the Yak Cafe. It was about a 5 min walk from the centre of Thamel. You would have to ask directions to get here because its a little hard to describe where exactly it is. Its on a fairly big laneway with lots of prayer flags. ie anywhere in Thamel!
It easily accomodated our group of ten and we had a great time getting to know each other over scrumptous momos and indian curries. The atmoshere was fun, no pretentiousness at all.
The scariest thing on the menu was the Yak steak- a few of the guys had it and thought it was okay, it was days before i even tasted Yak!
Its a nice, cheap, friendly place and definately worth going, even if it is just to have a yak steak at the Yak Cafe.
