Lonely Planet review for Helena’s

Helena’s is deservedly popular for its set breakfasts, one of the highest rooftops in Thamel, cosy interior and super-friendly service, with a wide range of coffee, good cakes, tandoori dishes and steaks. It’s warm and cosy in winter. If you are heading off trekking, consider breakfast on the 8th floor a form of high-altitude training.

One of the biggest restaurant in Thamel

    guideupendra recommends this,

Helena's is a big restaurant in Thamel serving lots of foods from western and Nepali societies. The prices are expensive but the taste is good though!

    Love the restaurant

    davek22 recommends this,

Helena's is now open. We recently had breakfast there in the rooftop and it was as good as ever. The four of us went there and had an unhurried breakfast. The view of the Monkey Temple is great. I would recommend the restaurant to all that plan to visit Nepal.

Good for: lunch, breakfast, dinner with friends or a date

    Good view but bad food!

    wini_yau does not recommend this,

Helena's may have got a good view rooftop, but the food and service wasn't as good. The breakfast price was more expensive than they stated in the guidebook. We ordered a simple breakfast, an omelette and a lemon tea, came in the bill for around Rs400. The food was okay but greasy, cant go too wrong with eggs. But we heard a friend had breakfast there as well the day before, she had got a green floaty coffee and the same greasy eggs. We all think for that price in Kathmandu sure you get better place for breakfast.

Breakfast on top of the world...

    rachhenderson recommends this,

Helena's was worthy of a twice-daily visit when we were in Kathmandu. Once in the morning for breakfast with the best view you can get without trekking into the Himalaya and again in the afternoon for fantastic chocolate cake and cheap cocktails.

Breakfast is cheap and filling, with all the standards -- eggs, bacon, toast... The chocolate cake is pretty similar to what you'd get at home, so is fantastic if your stomach is craving something other than dahl baht.

Helena's is easy to find on one of the main roads in Thamel. Look for the tall red and black building, then head straight for the stairs when you enter -- the five storey climb is well worth it and will seem like a breeze if you've just arrived back from a long trek, or is good preparation if you are about to brave the mountains. From the roof top garden you can see all the hustle and bustle of Thamel, across to monkey temple and then the massive Himalaya in the background. Breathtaking!
