Royal Botanic Gardens
The verdant Royal Botanic Gardens is a quiet and peaceful spot for a walk or picnic, except on Friday and Saturday when the place is overrun with schoolkids. The visitor centre has some good exhibits on Nepal’s flora and in the middle is the decorative Coronation Pond with its 7m commemorative pillar.

Shanti Ban Buddha
On the hillside above Godavari is the Shanti Ban Buddha, an enormous golden Buddha image, created by local Buddhists who were inspired by the Japanese Peace Pagoda movement. To reach the statue, take the signposted road to the right at the end of the village.

Beside the Tibetan monastery is the entrance to the Godavari Kunda Community Forest, a 363-acre woodland managed by local people, that provides a haven for 300 species of birds.
