  2. Street Art in Swakopmund

Blog: Inside the Travel Lab - 4 March 2011

Alright, I admit it. I did agree with the description of Namibia's adventure playground, Swakopmund, as "unimaginably dreary." I still do. Yet as I was leaving town, I drove along this street of, well, street art that lifted my spirits...

  3. Unimaginably Dreary: Namibia’s Adrenaline Capital

Blog: Inside the Travel Lab - 27 January 2011

The violence of the wind whips me with my own hair and spills tears down my frozen cheek. Somewhere in the greyness, the wind howls, screams and groans, ripping up canvases and kicking over dustbins like the soundtrack to a teen horror film.

  4. Swakopmund

Blog: Ketchup With Aubs - 31 May 2010

the sea frontBradt’s Namibia guidebook reckons that Swakopmund is viewed by Namibians as the country’s only seaside resort, and i reckon they are probably right.

  5. Arrival Cape Town/ Ending the journey of a lifetime

    Blog: Nilikuta Shani - 12 April 2010

Finally the day came when my Africa Adventure ended—after 6 short weeks (9, including the 3 weeks I spent in Uganda), my overland trip was coming to a rather uneventful close. My face was glued to the window as we … Continue reading →Arrival Cape Town/ Ending the journey of a lifetime is a post from: Nilikuta Shani

  6. Walvis Bay/ Kayaking with seals and dolphins

    Blog: Nilikuta Shani - 5 April 2010

Whenever I’m near the seaside, I always feel at home. For the first 21 years of my life I lived in the San Francisco Bay Area, and spent hundreds of hours out on the water. My love for the ocean hasn’t subsided since leaving, and I find myself drawn to it in my travels. The [...]

  7. Wipe Out/ From air to surf to sand

    Blog: Nilikuta Shani - 2 April 2010

My skydive on the first day in Swakopmund, Namibia, would be tough to beat, if indeed it could be topped. I decided to continue with my theme of pursuing unique adventure activities while here, to get the full taste of what the town, the ocean, and the surrounding Namib Desert were like. So when one [...]

  8. Skydive Swakopmund/ The short drop to earth

    Blog: Nilikuta Shani - 31 March 2010

I never thought I would skydive. My deterrent was simple: splat. I thought it far too risky and dangerous and it simply never appealed to me. Two things have changed for me, the interaction of which caused me to take the plunge and allow myself to be thrown out of a plane at 10,000 feet: [...]

  9. Swakopmund, Namibia/ Enter, the mirage

    Blog: Nilikuta Shani - 29 March 2010

Entering Swakopmund is like entering some bizarre sort of mirage, in the best sort of way. Coming into town from any direction, visitors drive past mile after mile of golden sand dunes; all of a sudden, palm tree-lined streets appear out of nowhere and are accompanied by wide, brick roads, seaside cafes, and thatched roof vacation homes. Swakopmund is [...]

  11. Miles and Money

    Blog: Africa Attraction - 22 September 2009

A long-wheel based Land Rover with all the trimmings, weighs just over two tonnes and is 4,599mm (not including the winch) long. For the inexperienced (us), it’s more like driving a tank than a car. Our first day started out rather shakily (me nearly reversing over Giles – hilarious, yes, but would have been a pain since we wouldn’t have been able to split the driving three ways), but as time and distance passed, with each of us taking our turn behind the wheel, we became more comfortable with the vehicle’s handling, weight, and engine. Confidence grew.

  12. Namibia, Swakopmund, Senic Air Flight over Sossusvlei.

Blog: Midwife Moira's Travel Blog. With Emirates Cabin Crew on the side. - 1 September 2009

In Swakopmund we had really got to grips with the sand based activities on offer! We driven trough the desert, climbed up the dunes and moon walked down them, rode over them on quad bikes, now it was time to fly over them and see what the desert meeting the ocean looked like from above.
