Climb North Africa's highest peak Mt Toubkal (4167m) and experience the magnificent panoramic views from the summit

Mt Toubkal (4167m) is the highest mountain in North Africa. The trek to the summit is challenging but non technical and does not require any mountaineering experience. We drive to Imlil a remote High Atlas village to begin. Following scree paths, we overnight near Neltner Refuge before attempting our ascent the next day. On a clear day the panoramic views from the summit are fantastic. Note: the tour and transport are non private / non exclusive.

Highlights

  • Reaching the summit of Mount Toubkal
  • Trek through Berber villages of the High Atlas
  • Djemaa el-Fna market place in Marrakesh

Itinerary

Day 1 Join Marrakesh

An early arrival is recommended in Marrakesh to explore this wonderful city. You have the opportunity to visit gardens, mosques, palaces, and the souqs of the old Medina before reaching the humming centre of Marrakesh: the Djemaa el-Fna. The atmosphere of this square is overwhelming with its jumble of food stalls, snake charmers, fortune and storytellers and the wide variety of people that flock to its attractions. The area is best visited in the evening, when the square really comes alive. It is a must to taste the many wonderful dishes on offer at the stalls.

Day 2 Drive to Imlil, commence trek (6 hours)

After an early breakfast, we leave Marrakesh and drive to the small village of Imlil (1740m) in the High Atlas Mountains. Here we meet our trek staff and mules, and then begin trekking to Aremd (1904m) about an hour away. We make a stop for lunch, and then follow mule tracks through the mountains to the village of Sidi Chamharouch. From here the path becomes steeper until we reach the Neltner camp (3207m), where we stop for dinner and overnight stay. Along the way there are many chances to stop and enjoy the beautiful mountain scenery.

Day 3 Summit attempt, and return to Neltner camp (5-6 hours)

We will make an early start for our attempt on Toubkal, North Africa’s highest peak, and may start off on our 3-4 hour trek to the summit in the dark to avoid the midday sun and to summit in time for sunrise. First we must traverse long scree slopes; tiring terrain at this altitude and we must proceed slowly to conserve energy. Higher sections are more rocky and there is little vegetation. Once at the summit the views are spectacular, and although wind and cold conditions mean we will not linger long, we have time to enjoy the scenes of surrounding peaks of the Atlas mountains and down to the plains around Marrakesh far in the distance. We then begin the descent back to Neltner camp, where we will have a late lunch and enjoy a well earned rest after a hard days trekking.

Day 4 Descend to Imlil and drive to Marrakesh (approx 4 hours)

Today we descend down the valley, passing again through the deeply religious village of Sidi Chamarouch. This area is also rich in wildflowers, and in spring we'll find the magnificent Peony Rose. We will also pass herds of goats traversing precarious mountain trails. We trek back down towards Imlil, and take lunch just outside the village. On arrival in Imlil we bid farewell to our trekking crew and their mules, before driving to Marrakesh for a celebratory farewell dinner. The rest of the evening is at leisure in Marrakesh, where you can return to the Djemma el-Fna to enjoy the atmosphere, or go shopping for some souvenirs in the souqs.

Day 5 In Marrakesh, trip concludes
