Faouzi Bensaidi's third film, Death for Sale, despite some mixed reviews, has been a festival success. After premiering at the Toronto Film Festival and closing the Marrakech Film Festival, it is now set to play in the Panorama section of the Berlin Film Festival.

The Belgians Are Coming !

We were at a loss to explain this until we discovered (courtesy of Quid in Fès) that Jetairfly, a Belgian airline which is a subsidiary of the largest Belgian tourism group, TUI Belgium, has taken over Jet4You.

From time to time, conservative groups in Morocco have called for performers to be banned because of their provocative style of dress, their jaunty lyrics or even their lifestyle. Regular readers of The View from Fez will well remember the fuss over Lebanese singer Haifa Wahbi and the attempts to ban Sir Elton John. In the latest incident calls were made to stop a performance by Lebanese singer Nancy Ajram. Ibn Warraq reports.

Fez Festival Update no.6: Night in the Medina II

The second Night in the Medina at the Fes Festival of World Sacred Music will take place from 20h00 on Tuesday 7 June. On these evenings, a number of concerts are planned at glorious palaces and riads across the ancient medina, and visitors choose which ones they'd like to see. You can usually manage three concerts as they're no longer than an hour each.

Despite the odd comment that The View from Fez must be a government mouthpiece, we have to say that the protests in Morocco on Sunday were generally calm and orderly. The police acted with restraint, there was no bombardment of people by airforce jets, no defections by ministers and the King has not fled to Venezuela or anywhere else.
