Lonely Planet review for Dar Roumana
The menu here takes cues from the riad’s name – house of pomegranates. Mediterranean with a Moroccan slant, including some interesting seafood dishes such as swordfish with pomegranates. It all works fabulously, and you eat in the courtyard or in fine weather up on the wonderful terrace. Alcohol is served.

Always a perfect evening
jacquelinevpowers recommends this,
Since moving to Fes in September 2008, my boyfriend and I have enjoyed dining at Dar Roumana. Though we first went to celebrate a birthday, we've found ourselves back at the Dar just to experience Sebastian and Jennifer's hospitality, delicious food and a romantic atmosphere.
The first time we dined, we sat on the plush couches in the salon, and had a prime view of the riad’s beautifully-restored zellij and candled-flanked fountain in the courtyard. Enjoying the warmth let off by the fireplace nearby, we relaxed before dinner and sipped pomegranate-flavored “Fassi navels”, Dar Roumana’s signature drink.
Once we sat down to dinner, along with two other couples, we took Sebastian’s recommendation for a tasty cabernet sauvignon from nearby Meknes. All of Dar Roumana’s food is prepared by Jennifer, Sebastian’s wife and the riad’s other owner, who happens to be trained as a Cordon Bleu chef. Dinner began with a simple, but rich Jerusalem artichoke and spinach soup – perfect comfort food for a chilly night November night – followed by tender chicken breast stewed with sherry and garlic, served alongside fresh broccoli (a rarity in Morocco) and good old-fashioned mashed potatoes.
Once we had enough stamina to delve into dessert, Andrew and I turned our attention back to the table after chatting with Jennifer, and finished our meal with elegant homemade tiramisu and strong coffee. Before heading home, though, we followed Sebastian and Jennifer’s recommendation to check out the beautiful view from their rooftop.
All in all, Dar Roumana offers a perfect evening and a tasty break from traditional Moroccan food for those looking to experience something besides couscous or tajine in the usual tourist restaurant.
