Recently Lonely Planet released its top ten countries for 2010. To our delight, Morocco was once again included. The destinations were arranged alphabetically, so there was no special ranking, but here is the list: El Salvador, Germany, Greece, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, New Zealand, Portugal, Suriname, USA.

Though the Berber people of southwestern Morocco have used Argan oil for centuries in their cuisine and for medicinal and cosmetic purposes, it has only been within the last decade that argan oil has become known to the outside world. In that time the prices of Argan oil have sky-rocketed. So, how much is Argan oil actually worth? In fact, that is not really the correct question. The question should be, "who is making money out of this Moroccan export?".

Morocco's world Jews convene in Essaouira pilgrimageHundreds of Moroccan Jews from the four corners of the world are convening in the Atlantic city of Essaouira for the Hiloula of Rabi Haim Pinto. A warm welcome was reserved to the pilgrims, who came from different countries to take part in this yearly four-day religious gathering, but also to "renew, like every year, their attachment to the alaouite throne (of Morocco), and pray for peace in the world," rabbi David Pinto said.

Eight percent increase in tourists visiting Morocco

Some 5 million tourists visited Morocco in Jan-Jul 2009According to the Moroccan tourism authorities, around 5 million tourists visited Morocco over January-July 2009, an increase of 8% compared with the same period of last year. French tourists topped the list with 1.94 million (+8%), followed by the Spaniards (1.11 million, + 14 %), the Belgians (291,000, +16 %), the Dutch (273,000, +14 %), the Germans (259,000, +4 %), the Britons (209,000, -10 %) and the Italians (186,000, +10 %). The arrivals of Scandinavian tourists showed a stagnation.

H.M. King launches Ramadan foodstuffs distribution.On Monday H.M. King Mohammed VI handed out food baskets to needy people in the Yacoub Al Mansour neighbourhood. This marked the launch of a 57 million dirhams ( $7.62 million) operation which consists in delivering foodstuffs to the needy during the holy month of Ramadan 1430 AH.

In Ramadan, the meal that breaks the fast in the late afternoon, is usually similar every day. Moroccans eat harira, a tomato and chickpea soup (see our recipe here), dates, syrupy cakes called chebakiyya and various breads, and drink fresh fruit juice.
