Narwama

The guide books all sing praises about this place (Lonely Planet you let us down).  This explains why there were only English tourists in here and no Marrakechis. The staff are extremely rude and unfriendly, the atmosphere is pretentious, and the food is mediocre and expensive.

We had a Thai curry, the couple on the table next to us had spag bol. It's not a gastronomic extravaganza by any means. This is the sort of food you can make yourself.

Expect to pay about 200-300 Dirhams for a very average main dish, and then expect to wait about 30 minutes to have the dirty plates taken away by a very snotty waiter.

I am being extremely restrained with my wording here, in that I'm avoiding all of the foul language I used at the time! I don't mind paying for good food and good service, but this place has neither.

Take my advice - spend your Dirhams on some menchoui in the souks!

It took me two visits to finally find this restaurant. I'm not sure why as eventually when I found Narwama, it was well sign-posted even though it is located at the end of an alley not far from Djemma el'Fna. It was worth the search. Walking in, there is a bar for pre-dinner drinks, not just wine and beer but also cocktails, which is in case you have to wait for a table. On entry to the restaurant itself the sight stopped me in my tracks. I was speechless. Stunning. The centre-piece is a fire and water fountain come sculpture in what is a beautifully restored riad. Elegant and tasteful with a real touch of Morocco best describes the surroundings. Then there is the food: a mixture of Thai, Moroccan and Asian. I have already returned for the Green Thai Curry and look forward to my next one. Not a place for those looking for a bargain, the surroundings make it well worth the expense.

On the last night of our trip, while looking for something other than tajine and couscous to eat, we stumbled across a sign pointing to a restaurant serving Oriental cuisine. We cautiously followed the sign down a derelict  alley way which was dimly lit. We were about to turn around when suddenly a waiter came out from a building up ahead and beckoned us inside. 
Stepping through the doorway I found myself in one of the most amazing places I had ever been. We were standing in an enormous ornate Moroccan palace which was open to the sky. Stars twinkled above us while beautiful twisted trees ordained with tiny fairy lights shone back in the courtyard below. Gothic style mirrors decorated the walls and soft pink and orange material covered lamps were dotted around. In the middle of the courtyard was a giant silver ball with a fountain, which by some bizarre magic was actually on fire!
 We were led across a glass covered river to our table and sat down to a gorgeous meal of Thai curries followed by mango sorbet and chocolate ice cream. Sitting here under the stars I felt like Moroccan royalty and simply fell in love with Marrakesh.
