Lonely Planet review
At a dusty junction in the east end of town, the Khan Palace aims to be the best hotel in the city. Rooms are plush, with a tasteful design and little extras like slippers, a robe, hair dryer and humidifier. The hotel contains three restaurants, including the exceptional Sakura Japanese restaurant.
The 102-room hotel has an unremarkable exterior design and a lobby best described as small and non-descript. Where the hotel excels is in its rooms, all decorated in beige and each with one wall given over to an attractive padded design. The bathrooms are impressive; all have a separate bath tub and shower. The luxury rooms are even good enough for royalty - the prince and princess of Holland stayed here during their visit in 2006. The hotel is managed by Kempinski, so you can be sure of international standards. Besides the Japanese restaurant, the hotel has the Kharakorum restaurant which specializes in Mongolian cuisine and the European-style Oasis restaurant - the breakfast here is possibly the best in the city. The basement of the hotel contains a small fitness centre and sauna. There is no swimming pool, only a splash pool big enough for wading. Free Internet access is available in the lobby. The only real flaw with the hotel is its location, set amid Soviet-era housing blocks, and slightly away from downtown.
