Three-part Mongolia Trip Report

Back in 2010 I drove my own 4x4 around every province of Mongolia, a truly unforgettable journey split over two parts, lasting more than 3.5 months and driving more than 10,000 kilometres.

Here, in three parts are the first of the two Mongolian journeys.

In the first part, I start on the Kazakhstan - Russia border, driving through the Altai Territory and Altai Republic, leaving Kosh Agach to reach the remote Ukok Plateau. I then cross via Tashanta into Mongolia, driving around Altai Tavan Bogd…

6 perfect days in winter Mongolia (whilst doing the Transsiberian): steppe, yaks, yurts and nomads

Hi all!

I have only just finished my 6 day (way too short) adventure in Mongolia, and am on my on-journey to Moscow by train, but am so stunned / impressed, that I am bursting to share! Hopeful to see that my experience helps anyone...

In a nutshell:
- Don't stay in UB for over a day. Ulan Bator is a bizarre and rather strange place to choose for a visit (horrendously dirty and not historical) - but just because of its strange-ness, you'd probably enjoy a day's stay (no more!!). And you'll…

Extending the 30 day visa-free stay in Mongolia

Hi, I'm heading to Mongolia this winter and would like to stay for up to 60 days. As a British citizen I know that I can now get 30 days visa-free. Its going be very difficult for me to apply for a Mongolian visa as I'm in rural China now and won't be going near Bejing, but I was hoping to extend the 30 days once in Mongolia. I know this can be done if you have a tourist visa, but as I will not have a visa at all, I want to know whether I am still able to pay to extend my length of stay or even…

Beijing to Mongolia- What Natural Wonders to See?

Hello all,

I am living in Beijing right now and will have some friends coming to visit in late April/Early May. Their visit matches up with a visa run I need to do and I would love to see Mongolia with them. We'll only have 4-5 days to spend there and I'd ideally like to get there by bus or train instead of flying.

I am not much a city person when I travel, so my primary interest would be trying to camp, visit National Parks and see natural beauty.

Does anyone have recommendations for the…

a few logistical questions

Hello fellow travelers,

I just have a few logistical questions for those of you that have been to Mongolia. We are planning on travelling July/August 2015. We are easy going travelers and like to plans things once we get to the destination. We are planning about a month in Mongolia; travelling around central, northwest to see the reindeer herders, and then on to the golbi desert. If you could help us out if you know the answers to any of the following questions that would be most helpful for…

Planning a memorable trip to Mongolia

I am planning a 30-40 days trip to Mongolia with kids. Objective is to experience the real soul of the country and its feel its rugged spirit. We would like to do homestay with nomads, spend time with them and soaking in Mongolian culture. Any word of advice from fellow travelers is welcome. By the way, I prefer traveling low-key, i.e. spend money of real experiences rather than hotels, etc. :)

Mongolia- A warm, wonderful, and lasting experience

Having recently returned from a fantastic trip to Mongolia I am compelled to close the chapter from where it began -- right here on this forum. After my friend Bruce suggested we take a long weekend in Mongolia.
Further research led me to an UK based tour company named Eternal-Landscapes and its team leader Jess Brooks. Her prompt, cheerful, and helpful correspondence was all we needed to move forward. On a reasonable budget (not inexpensive but certainly an excellent value) Jess arranged the…

Potty Humor in the Gobi Desert

I was reading through some old blog posts and came across this one I wrote during my ger-to-ger home stay experience in Mongolia. It was just so dang funny I wanted to share it here with you all. I think it offers some nice perspective for anyone interested in the TransSiberian/TransMongolian railway adventures, Mongolian Steppe Living and Nomad Home Stays, etc.

So, copied from my blog, Traveling With Aeri, in October 2012:

“My last post was pretty dramatic and harrowing, so let’s follow it…

Cycling Mongolia May to mid June 2015

Hey everyone,

I am planning to cycle Mongolia starting early May of 2015 into mid June of 2015. I wanted to know what others have experienced cycling there this time of year. I know that British cyclistsTom Allen and Andy Welch did it in 2010 and reported positive experiences. I have heard that August and September are the optimal months but I am going through Mongolia as the start of a longer tour.

-How was the weather?
-still decent scenery with the lack of green?

My route will start in…
