Mr Wang
In most cities, travellers tend to overlook the restaurants and bars set inside hotels, or only eat at the hotel in which they are staying. Ulaanbaatar, however, has a number of excellent restaurants and bars, privately owned and managed, inside the city's top end hotels. Mr Wang for example is a good Chinese restaurant in Chinggis Khaan Hotel.

Ikh Mongol
Reputedly the best place in town, Ikh Mongol has a diverse menu with Mongolian and Chinese dishes. Seating is in big red booths and the walls are designed like the interior of a ger. It's owned by a local kingpin who runs a similar restaurant in Khovd city.

Chinggis Bar
Depending on your perspective, the outer space theme here seems totally surreal or completely appropriate for northern Mongolia. Chinese and Mongolian food served by day, beer by night.

Altan Urag
Behind a supermarket and just past the Danzan Ravjaa museum on the left, this place serves authentic, if somewhat oily Chinese meals. One dish is big enough for two people.

Orgil
Decent Chinese restaurant with a bona fide Chinese chef. It's in the northern part of town, near the monastery.
