Rock Bottom Café
Bask in the vintage vibe of this ’70s-era American roadhouse, while a cheesy cover band blares Top-40 hits. While it’s a regular pub by day, no self-respecting woman would come here alone at night. But with a mob of friends and a bottle of tequila gone, it’s the quintessential ending to a rollickin’ night on the town.

Martef 10
Martef 10 'Basement 10' is a nonprofit student club that hosts live music shows most nights of the week from 22:00. During the school year it's closed Tuesday and Saturday. During the summer it's closed Saturday and Monday. Shows are usually jazz, Irish or Israeli music. It's very informal - cushions on the floor make up the seating and dress is casual. The room is windowless and a little claustrophobic, but smoking is thankfully prohibited.

Jules Bar
The six-piece Filipino house band kicks, twirls and belts out Top-40 hits, while an odd mix of oil workers, Southeast Asians and European flight crews (especially on Fridays) grind shoulder-to-shoulder on the floor. Beer’s a bargain on Sunday’s Corona Beach Party, and on Tuesdays women get admission and one drink for free. If you need nibbles, there’s a decent Mexican menu. Dig those charcoal portraits of Whitney and Mariah.

Barzar
Barzar is a bit of a pick-up joint, but it’s good for preclub cocktails. Skip the glorified sports bar upstairs and report straight to the waterfront terrace to sip cold beers and killer cosmos while lolling in a beanbag chair. There are different promotions nightly and sometimes you can eavesdrop on entertainment in the adjacent Madinat Amphitheatre.

Mai Tai Lounge
The tiki bar at Trader Vic’s mixes lethal cocktails served in pineapples with paper umbrellas – the ultimate in kitsch. It’s great fun once you’ve downed your second round and the salsa band gets going, usually at 9.30pm. Unlike its sister branch at the Crowne Plaza on Sheikh Zayed Rd, here there’s room to dance.

Paloma
Hotel bars are generally only open to guests and 'members' (who pay an annual 'membership'). These rules, however, are continually relaxing and even Qataris can now be seen in some of these establishments (once strictly forbidden). One of the most lively bars in town is the Paloma which often has live music and doubles as a Tex-Mex restaurant.

Open
This place has uber-cool interior décor, complete with fish swimming in the walls and a moody bar that changes colours like a chameleon. It attracts a 20s and 30s singles crowd and has either a DJ or live music most nights. They also have a kitchen serving up excellent meat and seafood dishes.

Peanut Butter Jam
You never know what you’re going to hear at PBJ. Sink into a beanbag in the rooftop gardens of Wafi Mall and munch on barbecued goodies while you take in the night’s acts. Much of it is amateurish – a couple of steps up from karaoke – but you may be surprised.

Dublin
Live English and Hebrew music on Monday and Irish on Tuesday. It’s best to call ahead to reserve a table on these nights. Dublin serves Guinness on tap (half-pint 26NIS) and has some hearty pub grub, including fish and chips, wraps and empanadas.

Trader Vic's
When it comes to cocktails (try the Samoan fogcutter), nowhere competes with this fun and lively Polynesian-style venue. With live Latin music and wafts of Mongolian barbequed lamb chops, you'll probably be seduced into staying for dinner.

More of a pub than a bar, this is a popular expat meeting place, with live music, a quiz night, televised sport and excellent Western-style bar food.
