Manglares de Dzinitún
About 1km inland from the beach on Calle 11, there are signs to this new ‘ecotour’ operation where you can kayak, canoe or mountain bike all in one day. A canoe tour runs M$200 per person for two hours, and takes you through a mangrove tunnel and good birding spots, made all the better by the lack of engine noise. You can camp here for M$800 a night (everything included), and there are also very basic cabins for an exorbitant M$600.

Reserva de la Biósfera Ría Celestún
The 591-sq-km Reserva de la Biósfera Ría Celestún is home to a huge variety of animal and bird life, including a large flamingo colony.
The best months to see the flamingos are from March or April to about September, outside the season of the nortes. Morning is the best time of day, though from 16:00 onward the birds tend to concentrate in one area after the day's feeding, which can make for good viewing.

La Palapa
A cut above the other seaside joints, La Palapa has an expansive dining area looking down to the sea, an attentive staff and savory seafood dishes, including a shrimp cocktail served in a coconut shell.

Restaurante Chivirico
A large place with wicker chairs and a TV with Spanish soaps creating its ambience, the Chivirico has excellent seafood and is well worth a visit.

Restaurant Los Pamponos
A tranquiler-than-thou joint on the beach, just north of Calle 11, this is a great spot for afternoon drinks on the sand.

La Playita
It's right on the (sometimes windy) beach with great views. Cheap seafood and ceviche are its main draw.
