    Mi Café

This American-style greasy-spoon diner caters both to travelers and local cowboys, serving up excellent breakfasts and coffee at big, comfy booths. 2. B

    Baja Frut

At this locally loved diner, 'los hotcakes'come with real syrup, juices are fresh, tea means two teabags, the coffee is bottomless, and portions are huge. The chilaquiles (a breakfast dish made with fried tortillas and red or green sauce) are outstanding, and the service is tops.

    Einstein

The owner didn't intend his restaurant to become downtown's most popular burger pit, but that's what people kept ordering. So the menu grew to include over a dozen types of burgers. Salads and pastas and a couple of seafood plates (his original idea was natural food) are still on the menu.

  4. D

    El Fenicio

Come here at 11pm and you’ll feel like you’ve stepped into a Hopper painting: the yellow light, the few solitary diners hunched over a meal. The food, a selection of mainly Mexican fare, is tasty and served promptly. Flan and decent American-style coffee are a tasty way to finish the day.

  5. E

    Restaurant Rome's

For some good ol' family-style cooking, slip into this old-school diner, complete with jukebox and big booths. The set lunch (including dessert and drink) is a bargain. Otherwise choose from modest, but well prepared Mexican plates. Great soups.

    Tortas Chapultepec

You can't beat the friendly service, good prices, and delicious tortas, burgers and fries at this family-style diner. There are several Mexican dishes, and a long list of egg-type breakfasts on the menu, too.

  7. G

    Café Pacífico

Worth mentioning because of its hours - it's open 24/7 - and serves up snacks and set breakfasts to a loyal clientele. It's light, bright and the nearest thing to a local version of a US diner.
