    Aromas

A second home for some of Matamoros’ artists and intellectuals, this hip restaurant features avant-garde paintings on exposed brick walls and an intimate garden patio, where you can enjoy breakfasts (M$15 to M$60), spinach salads, fruity crepes, and well-executed main dishes including pastas and seafood. Prices are generally high, but the comida corrida (M$55), which includes soup, drink and dessert, is a great deal. The bar area upstairs, with modern booths, is perfect cocktail-quaffing territory and has live trova at weekends and jazz and other chill sounds on the stereo weekdays.

  3. B

    La Cascada

An outdoor patio and a lengthy seafood menu makes this little joint extremely popular. Try the chile relleno de marisco (chili stuffed with seafood), or the house specialty, bolsitas de mariscos (seafood, onions, tomatoes and chilies baked in tinfoil). One regular claims the pescado veracruzano (fish baked with veggies) is to die for. Great breakfasts, too.

  4. C

    La Matraca

Set in the attractive courtyard of a former colonial mansion, La Matraca is popular for its all-you-can-eat buffet breakfast (M$39), filling lunches and a dinner menu featuring poblana classics. The food here is nothing special, but the buffet is so easy and so cheap it’s easy to see the budget appeal.

    Madre Tierra

A long-time travelers' favorite, Madre Tierra serves an eclectic and mainly vegetarian menu on a tranquil patio or in an atmospheric dining room. Breakfasts are superb, but perhaps sliding by on its reputation, other meals can be hit-or-miss.

  16. M

    Iguana Bar

Beneath the classy Restaurante Onix, Iguana is a sound bet for reasonably priced breakfasts and tacos and other Mexican standards. On weekends and during high season, it’s also a good place to catch guitar-strummin’ troubadors.

  17. N

    Panificadora Montejo

For good, cheap breakfasts, try a selection of panes dulce (sweet rolls and breads) from Panificadora Montejo on the corner of the main plaza. A full bag of goodies usually costs no more than M$25.

  18. Las Fajitas

It offers a complete breakfast for just M$30, and you can get fresh mahimahi (a type of fish) fillets for M$75 (they worked out a deal with a local diver to get fresh fish) – not a bad deal for the Zona Hotelera.

  19. O

    Restaurant Impala

The menu, with its cryptic English translations, covers all the usuals, but the massive breakfast platters (around $59) with favorites from both sides of the border set this simple hotel restaurant apart.

    Helen's Enrique Restaurant

This long-running place, with a terrace overlooking the plaza, is good for chicken and meat dishes, breakfasts and antojitos - or just for an evening beer.

  27. T

    Spencer's

Inside Hotel Mar de Cortez, this is one of the best breakfast values in town. US-style eggs and potato plates. Plenty more is on the menu, and it's all good.
