    Incredible Spanish language school!

    kimbrechapman recommends this,

Amigos del Sol is a small school that structures lessons around the needs of each student. I came as an intermediate learner who had learned in a conversation school in the States, but had little instruction in grammar. Except when a student living in Oaxaca joined us periodically, I had a class by myself because I was the only one at that level. My instructor Celso took me through a crash course in grammar that was superb! In only three weeks I made a great deal of progress and had many months of material to take home with me to continue my studies. The progress has become apparent upon my return home. At work, I’m able to help people in Spanish on the phone with simple needs with relative ease, and can hold more complex conversations as long as they are slowed down.

The school’s director Rogelio is kind and giving. He carefully listens to his students and tries to meet their needs. The school felt more like a family than a formal school so my four hours a day of instruction went by quickly, fueled with coffee and laughter. Rogelio set up the perfect family for me to live with during my trip, the type of family that will include students in their daily lives. I hope that I will be able to come back. I was sad to leave the beautiful Oaxaca, the family I lived with, and Amigos del Sol, which is truly special.

A fantastic spanish learning course taking us to new level!

    helendm recommends this,

My daughter and I are intermediate Spanish learners, and we studied with Rogelio three hours daily for five days during our visit to Oaxaca. I truly wish we could have stayed longer! We worked deeply on verb tenses, structures and patterns using Rogelio's stunning and extremely helpful logic model. He was patient, kind and flexible with his time -- and he drove us into town every day after class! He addressed all our questions about grammar and idioms, and we really did advance in our understanding of the deeper logic of the language's verb forms. We are definitely planning to return to Oaxaca to study at Instituto Amigos del Sol!

A wonderful experience for a beginning level student

    mhibiscus recommends this,

I had the pleasure of studying at Amigos del Sol for a few days in November. Rogelio was extremely accommodating to my schedule. My teacher, Miriam, couldn't have been more patient with me even though I started mid week leaving me a few days behind. With several classrooms working at once with students at different levels Amigos del Sol offers the opportunity for students to find the right class and move at a pace that is rewarding.

    Wonderful school!

    mranville recommends this,

Rogelio and his instructors are top notch, and I enjoyed every minute of the classes I took there (1 month, 3 hours each morning). I'm a visiting college professor from the states, and they took great care to incorporate my needs for specialized vocabulary into my lessons. I recommend the school wholeheartedly.

Wonderful experience, great service, highly recommended.

    charlietuba recommends this,

Rogelio and his staff provided excellent teaching methods in a friendly comfortable atmosphere. Arranging a homestay that suited our needs, and following up with any changes we requested was also a plus. Rogelio's advice about life in Oaxaca was also invaluable. The was such a great experience, but the most valuable for me was the prompt correspondence I was able to have before my trip...HIGHLY recommended.

    great experience!

    SeattleKaty recommends this,

I visited Oaxaca for just two weeks this August, and my friends and I took 9 hours of classes (3 mornings) at Amigos del Sol. Of course we didn't learn everything in nine hours, but it was well worth every minute! We were a group of four at all different levels and our instructor, Hector, did an amazing job keeping the class interesting and challenging for everyone. Rogelio, the school's owner, is a really friendly, gracious guy and was available to take us up to the school from Centro each morning. I strongly recommend this school even if you have just a short time in Oaxaca.

    I recommend without hesitation!

    especial6000 recommends this,

I spent two weeks studying Spanish here in May and loved it. The people are very professional yet fun. I signed up for group classes but in low season there were only 4 students at the school and since we were of different levels, Rogelio gave us each our own private teacher. I am quite sure that wouldn't happen at every school. Also, they don't charge crazy registration fees like some other schools. I did a homestay which was a really nice way to get to know the local culture and get immersed in the language. My family had mucho paciencia with my Spanish! Thank you everyone for this great learning experience!

Great Place to learn Spanish for any one

    soccerpie recommends this,

This place super great at welcoming anyone at any level of spanish. Each teacher there is truly dedicated to making the best of your experience, rather than teaching you with pre-made game plan they asked me and discussed with me what I wanted most out of the class and they more than surpassed that expectation. I remember the first day I couldnt speak a word of spanish but after about 4 weeks at the school I can honestly get around mexico and talk at a great level, stepping into intermediate! its been a great expereince and would highyly recommend this place to study if possible!

Amigos del Sol is the best place to learn Spanish in Oaxaca!

    tennylee recommends this,

I arrived in Oaxaca alone, knowing almost no Spanish. I called Amigos del Sol immediately from hostel and they were able to get me started with their Spanish curriculum that afternoon. I only spent four days in Oaxaca but each day I spent three hours at Amigos del Sol preparing for the rest of my five week trip through Mexico. Hector, my tutor, made sure that I was prepared for the situations I expected to encounter. I was very comfortable speaking Spanish with him and the written homework he assigned proved very helpful. When I go back back to Oaxaca, I will definitely return to Amigos del Sol to better my Spanish and see me new friends!

A great place to learn Spanish.

    johnnieprather recommends this,

If you're looking to improve your Spanish in Oaxaca, you won't find a better place to get started. All you have to do is get in touch with director Rogelio Ballesteros and he'll take it from there. He'll listen to your reasons for studying Spanish, assess your level and fix you up with a class -- even if that's a class of one and you can only stay for a few days. There are never more than three students in a class so you'll always get lots of personal attention and lots of opportunities to practice.

Rogelio will even fix you up with a home stay if you want -- and he's one of the few people I would trust with that delicate task.

The teachers of Amigos del Sol have been at it for quite a while -- and it shows. First-rate professionals, they are committed to helping you learn how to get it right. They are very knowledgeable, infinitely patient, superb resources for all things Oaxacan -- and a lot of fun.

I have studied Spanish in a variety of situations and this one is quite simply the best. I highly recommend that you start or continue your studies at Los Amigos del Sol.

    A very good experience

    ast_kleinevers recommends this,

It's been 10 years that I've taken classes at "Amigos del Sol" and I returned in autumn 2010. Still the head of school and the various teachers are very dedicated to a friendly openminded teaching approach, making the students feel welcome. Even though the location of the school has changed it nevertheless still exuberates a very friendly and welcoming atmosphere. I can only highly recomend this language school in Oaxaca.

    an excellent experience!

    mariannepirlot recommends this,

I've recently spent 2 weeks in Mexico and before I left,I had decided to take a Spanish course in Oaxaca. I chose Amigos Del Sol because I was very happy with all the information Rogelio (the director of the school) gave me by e-mail. He was very friendly and answered my numerous questions about everything! And it was a great experience! I only had a week in Oaxaca but I learned a lot and had fun at the same time.
My teacher was friendly, very patient with me and encouraging which was exactly what I needed.
I've only got one regret, I would have loved to stay longer!

I offer an unequivocal recommendation of Amigos del Sol

    katodpa11 recommends this,

During my third (3rd) trip to study Spanish in Oaxaca, MX, I studied for the first (1st) time with Amigos del Sol. I was completely satisfied in every aspect of my experiences. The facility and teachers were very good. Rogelio Ballesteros, owner/Director, and teacher, does EVERYTHING to OPTIMIZE one’s learning experience. Rogelio was always listening and teaching, always attentive, positive, cheerful, and graciously accommodating. The location of Amigos del Sol is perfect – just minutes away from the historic, beautiful, and family-friendly park Benito Juarez, El Llano, and easily accessible to el Centro and all of the fabulous neighborhoods of Oaxaca. I am pleased to offer an unequivocal recommendation of Amigos del Sol, San Felipe del Agua, Oaxaca, MX.

    fun, friendly, fantastic instruction!

    abs122478 recommends this,

I recently completed two weeks of study at Amigos. Prior to leaving, i had extensive discussions with the director, Rogelio. As described in other reviews, he is thoughtful, accomodating, and professional. He located an ideal homestay for me; i was comfortable and well taken care of.
I was really happy with the quality of instruction and the atmosphere of the school. Everyone seemed happy to teach me, get to know me, and help make my two weeks memorable. My teachers were fun and easy to learn from. Lastly, the teachers were patient. No matter how many times I asked them to go over pronouns, they would do it again!! I would definitely recommend Amigos del Sol to anyone looking to take a Spanish class in Mexico.

Studied Here Three Times -A Lifelong Learner

    kevinmpa recommends this,

Based on the experience of studying three times at Amigos del Sol over the past three years:

The owner/manager Rogelio Ballesteros speaks fluent English if needed, but he will speak Spanish to you at all times. He is a very patient man. On one occasion my family of four all studied for a week there. Our daughter has lived in Spain and Argentina, so she is fairly fluent in Spanish. Our son never had a lesson apart from Sesame Street on TV, and we are a middle-aged couple in the intermediate Spanish range. All learned much and improved quickly. Our Spanish-speaking daughter, who is hard to impress, was pleased with the concrete progress she made at the advanced level.

Rogelio arranged a great homestay in a private house in central Oaxaca. The family included us in activities and helped with conversation throughout the week.

If you don't want a homestay, the most convenient place to stay is Hostal Don Nino. Rogelio picks up students there each morning. He drives the group to the school in the suburb of San Felipe. It is about a five minute drive. It may sound inconvenient, but, in fact, classes begin the moment Rogelio greets you in the morning. This may be the most flexible school in Oaxaca. For example, if you have excursions planned on two days of the week, he permits you to study the other three. Many students with only a day or two to study at Amigos del Sol, do get something out of it. Honestly, 3 weeks would be an ideal amount of time to really see some progress with the Spanish language.

On a recent trip, March 2011, took 5 short morning classes at Amigos del Sol. Usually there was only one other student in the class. For this recent week Hector was the teacher, and he is a splendid.

Good for: seniors, backpackers, College Students

A great way to learn Spanish and explore Oaxaca

    jeremyiggers recommends this,

I had a great experience with Amigos del Sol. Instead of having class at the school, I met my teacher, Hector for one-on-one lessons in a park. Soon we were having our classes, while walking around the city, exploring the markets and other sites. The school also arranged a great family homestay for me.

Best Spanish language school in Oaxaca

    laurenwaits recommends this,

Probably the best Spanish language school in Mexico, for all I know! Compared to all others, Instituto Amigos del Sol offers the greatest flexibility, customization, and high quality language instruction available. I had the privilege to study with Hector, Rogelio and Celso for more than 6 months and went from speaking almost NO Spanish, to comfortably holding extensive personal and professional conversations exclusively en espanol. Instituto Amigos del Sol can take all the credit. I highly, highly recommend them if you are looking for a serious but fun approach to learning Spanish at any level.

    Good for: Anyone and everyone!

    Amigos del Sol = Accommodating/Hospitable!

    jenniferfurlong recommends this,

I have returned to Amigos del Sol twice since I first stumbled upon it in Oaxaca with my daughter two years ago. The director and teachers have all been amazing to the point that we have not even bothered to look into alternative schools for our subsequent trips.

They were willing to accommodate my schedule, which was a major advantage, and were adept at catering their classes to different levels and learners. For my daughter, they worked patiently to make language-learning a creative and artistic pursuit. For me, fresh-brewed (free!) coffee in the morning was exactly what I needed to turn on my brain...

    Five stars.

    Don't pass up the opportunity!

    lowtreck recommends this,

We recently had the good fortune to be taught Spanish for two weeks at Amigos del Sol in Oaxaca. Our teacher quickly assessed our level of ability, made us feel very comfortable with her easy manner in taking us from basic grammar to a level of understanding that enabled us to converse and understand the language with a degree of confidence.
To have found a school with such a friendly and professional atmosphere was more than we expected; on reflection we realised that the school had our interests very much at heart, and ensured that during the two weeks we were given every opportunity to improve our knowledge and confidence - gracias, Amigos del Sol!

    Great learning experience

    westender700 recommends this,

I was only at Amigos del Sol for 5 days but I learned more Spanish in those days than the previous many years travelling in Mexico and taking Spanish classes. Small class sizes, friendly, competent staff. I made amigos that I'm still in touch with, and I even hung out with my instructors after class, seeing a Oaxaca that most visitors never would. Best thing though is that there was no registration fee and I didn't need to book weeks in advance: a boon for the traveler without a rigid schedule. I called on Sunday, started on Monday. How cool is that? If I go back to Oaxaca, I know where my first port of call will be.

    Excellent School to Learn Spanish

    ldarwent recommends this,

I have been a student at Amigos del Sol on several occasions. I have found the experience to be enjoyable each time. The Institute is located in a quiet, pleasant area of Oaxaca and is housed in an attractive building. The instructors are very amiable and approachable. Class sizes are small with a great deal of attention given to each student. Each student can learn at his/her own rate and the instructors are very patient with those who learn slowly (myself included). By cultivating a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, the Institute makes learning Spanish a rewarding and enjoyable endeavor. I am planning to attend again.

When in Oaxaca it’s the only choice for me.

    gbstampa recommends this,

As a repeat visitor to Oaxaca I found that the best way to get to know Oaxaca is to take an immersion Spanish class at Amigos Del Sol. Amigos Del Sol offers classes for students of all levels with small classes and schedule flexibility. Amigos Del Sol has friendly knowledgeable instructors that are willing to cater classes your language needs. The school goes out of it way to arrange housing, provides excursions and a multitude of activities. When in Oaxaca it’s the only choice for me.
